Late Leads Slip Away in Losses to Yellowjackets

UW-Stevens Point saw two late leads slip away and dropped close games in both ends of a softball doubleheader on Sunday at UW-Superior.

The Pointers lost the opening game 4-3 in eight innings and then fell 12-10 in the second game for their fifth straight loss. UW-Stevens Point dropped to 18-13-1 overall and 2-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Pointers actually saw two late leads fall in the opening game as they took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a single by Melissa Boldt and held the lead into the bottom of the seventh when UW-Superior tied the game on a pinch-hit, run-scoring single by Kacy Johnston.

UW-Stevens Point went back ahead in the top of the eighth as Kristin Konieczny and Jenny Feidt each had run-scoring singles, but the Yellowjackets scored three times in the bottom of the inning for the win. Erin Kegley drove in the first run with a single and then scored the winning run on a two-run single by Jamie Lovstad.

Laura Zierler was three-for-four to lead the Pointers. Hope Krause had five strikeouts and allowed just one earned run in the defeat.

In the second game, UW-Stevens Point scored five runs in the fourth inning and carried a 9-7 lead into the sixth inning when the Yellowjackets scored five runs to escape with another win. Kegley tied the game with a run-scoring single and then Becky Crane followed with a three-run homer for a 12-9 lead. Crane also had a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

The Pointers added a run in the seventh and scored in each of the last five innings, while pounding out 12 hits. Five different players had two hits, including Zierler, who hit a solo homer in the sixth inning.

     UW-Stevens Point plays a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
