Tobalsky Blanks
Titans as Pointers Earn Split
Ashley Tobalsky fired a six-hit shutout in the
opening game as the UW-Stevens Point softball team blanked UW-Oshkosh 2-0
to snap a five-game losing streak on Wednesday in Oshkosh.
The Titans rallied to win the second game 5-3
and force a split in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
doubleheader, dropping the Pointers to 19-14-1 overall and 3-9 in the
WIAC. UW-Oshkosh is now 23-13 overall and 10-2 in the league.
Tobalsky scattered the Titans six hits over six
different innings in the opening game win. UW-Oshkosh had leadoff singles
in four innings, but Tobalsky worked out of each jam behind five
strikeouts in her third shutout of the year.
UW-Stevens Point struck out 14 times against
Titans hurler Ronessa Stampfli, but the Pointers scratched out two runs
in the second inning to snap Stampflis streak of 24 straight scoreless
innings pitched. Laura Zierler led off with a single and Korryn Brooks
laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown down the right field line.
Pinch-runner Danielle Ashbeck scored from first base and Brooks ended up
at third where she scored on a two-out wild pitch.
The Pointers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two
innings in the second game. Laura Van Abel had a first inning run-scoring
single and then capped a string of four straight hits in the second inning
by driving in another run. Jackie Berger also doubled in the first inning
and drove in a run in the second.
UW-Oshkosh rallied with five runs on seven hits
in the second inning, tying the game on a two-run double by Amy Sullivan
and taking the lead on a run-scoring single by Jessica Clark. Allison Dorn
pitched three scoreless innings of relief to hold the Titans the rest of
the way, but Stampfli entered the game in relief for UW-Oshkosh and struck
out six while allowing one hit in three and two-thirds innings. The
UW-Oshkosh sophomore now has 238 strikeouts and six walks in 154 innings
pitched this season.
