Jellish and Van Abel Land First-Team All-WIAC Softball Honors

A pair of former high school teammates at UW-Stevens Point were selected to the all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball squad as junior centerfielder Mandy Jellish and sophomore shortstop Laura Van Abel were both named to the first team.

The two former Kaukauna High School standouts were joined by another previous Galloping Ghosts player as sophomore third baseman Laura Zierler was named to the honorable mention squad. Senior leftfielder Rebekah Bauer was also an honorable mention selection.

Jellish led the league in hitting with a .442 average, which also ranked as the fourth-highest single-season average in school history. Her 61 hits shared the league lead and were also the fourth-highest total in Pointers history. Jellish, who also earned first-team honors in 2004, led the team and ranked third in the conference with 35 runs scored.

Van Abel was third in the league in batting with a .427 average and led the conference with four triples. Her nine stolen bases ranked sixth in the league. She was among the conferences top fielding shortstops with just five errors in 79 chances and also spent time at first base. Van Abel missed six straight starts with a broken hand, but had some of her best performances with the injury, hitting .483 (14-for-29) over the last nine games of the year.

Zierler received honorable mention laurels for the second straight year while hitting .319 with 23 RBIs. She also ranked seventh in the league with nine doubles and finished the season with hits in 11 of the last 12 regular season games.

Bauer, a Stevens Point native, finished her career as UW-Stevens Points career leader with 44 doubles and 60 extra base hits. A first-team all-WIAC selection the past two seasons, Bauer led the conference with 35 RBIs and ranked second with 14 doubles while hitting .323 this season.

UW-Eau Claires Casey Leisgang and UW-Oshkoshs Whitney Tyriver shared Position Player of the Year honors. The two schools also shared the Pitcher of the Year award as the Blugolds Mallory McKinney and the Titans Ronessa Stampfli were both honored. UW-Eau Claire coach Leslie Huntington collected her second straight Coach of the Year award.
