Jellish and Van
Abel Collect All-Region Accolades
UW-Stevens Point softball players Mandy Jellish
and Laura Van Abel were both recognized on the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association all-Great Lakes Region squad after hitting over .400 for the
Pointers this season.
The two former Kaukauna High School standouts
were among 14 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players
recognized on the three squads. Jellish, a junior centerfielder, was a
second-team All-Region selection, while Van Abel, a sophomore shortstop,
was a third-team performer. Both earned first-team all-WIAC honors earlier
this spring.
Jellish led the league in hitting with a .442
average, which also ranked as the fourth-highest single-season average in
school history. Her 61 hits shared the league lead and were also the
fourth-highest total in Pointers history. Jellish, who also earned
first-team honors in 2004, led the team and ranked third in the conference
with 35 runs scored.
Van Abel was third in the league in batting with
a .427 average and led the conference with four triples. Her nine stolen
bases ranked sixth in the league. She was among the conferences top
fielding shortstops with just five errors in 79 chances and also spent
time at first base. Van Abel missed six straight starts with a broken
hand, but had some of her best performances with the injury, hitting .483
(14-for-29) over the last nine games of the year.
UW-Stevens Point finished 24-16-1 overall for
its 13th straight 20-win season. |
