Pointers Advance to WIAC
Semifinals With 5-0 Win
Box Score
A two-day break had no effect on the
UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater womens soccer teams as the squads
played to an identical result as three days earlier with the Pointers
posting a 5-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday at the Pointer
Soccer Bowl.
UW-Stevens Point also beat the Warhawks by the
same score on Saturday in the regular season finale, remaining red hot
on offense and stingy on defense as the Pointers have now outscored
their past five opponents by a combined 34-0.
Typically an outstanding first half team, the
Pointers saved their best play for the second half on Tuesday, getting
four goals after halftime to pull away for the easy win. UW-Stevens
Point is now 35-2 all-time in the WIAC tournament and advances to the
semifinals on Friday in Eau Claire to face UW-Oshkosh at 2 p.m. The Pointers are 12-3-2 overall, while UW-Whitewater ended the
year 6-11-1.
UW-Stevens Points only first half goal came
on a persistent play by sophomore forward Jennisa Koch. Kaylee Weise
sent a cross for Koch into the box that Warhawks goalkeeper Sam Neely
appeared to have covered, however, Koch stayed with the play, prying the
ball away from Neely and converting a shot into the empty net.
UW-Whitewater had a terrific chance to tie the
match with 10 minutes left in the first half. Following a scramble in
the penalty box, Lisa Meyer found herself with possession 10 yards in
front of a wide open goal. However, Pointers goalkeeper Meredith
DeCaluwe recovered in time to smother Meyers soft shot a half-yard in
front of the goalline.
The Pointers used a three-goal flurry over a
six-minute span early in the second half to put away the match. Anna Van
Stippen made it 2-0 off a perfect cross by Katie Waterman and, just over
two minutes later, Liz Kidd scored a similar goal on a cross by Weise.
Weise finished the outbreak with a 20-yard
unassisted blast over Neelys head to put the Pointers ahead 4-0. The
sophomore forward added another goal with 20 minutes left on a hustling
play to become just the third player in school history to score 20 goals
in a season. Koch sent a cross into the box that Weise headed toward the
goal. Warhawks reserve goalkeeper Alysse Lemke deflected the shot, but
Weise chased down the loose ball and headed it again into the open net.
Weise had a chance for a hat trick, but Lemke,
her former high school teammate at Brookfield East, stopped a penalty
kick with 5:34 left in the match. Weise joins Marie Muhvic and Kelly
Fink as 20-goal scorers for the Pointers. Muhvic and Fink each reached
the mark three times. Weises two goals and two assists give her 53
points for the season, moving within one point of Muhvic for third in school history a
single season. Over the current five-match winning streak, Weise has 10
goals and nine assists for 29 points.
DeCaluwe had two saves in posting her fifth
straight shutout as the Pointers defense held a 12th consecutive
opponent to under 10 shots. UW-Stevens Point outshot the Warhawks 22-8
for the match. |
