Chances in Defeat
Box Score
UW-Stevens Point had plenty of scoring
opportunities, but it was UW-River Falls that took advantage of its best
chance, getting a late goal to defeat the Pointers 1-0 in a Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens soccer contest at the
Pointer Soccer Bowl.
The Pointers fired 13 shots, though only two
were on goal as several sailed just over the net and two hit the
crossbar. UW-River Falls, meanwhile, put seven of its eight shots on
goal, including a pair of back-to-back shots from Kim Saufl and Amy
Jensen that led to the only goal of the match with 16:36 left.
Saufl fired a hard shot from close range that
deflected off Pointers goalkeeper Meredith DeCaluwe and directly to
Jensen, who put in the rebound. UW-Stevens Point did not have another
shot to tie the match until 1:08 remaining when Alison Regal launched a
shot from 20 yards out that hit off the crossbar.
The Pointers also hit a crossbar in the
opening minute of the match on a similar long shot from Anna Van Stippen.
UW-Stevens Point had four other shots in the second half that were
inches above the crossbar.
UW-River Falls only shot that wasnt on goal
was one of the Falcons other best chances as Saufl broke behind the
defense early in the second half and missed wide right to an open net.
DeCaluwe made six saves for the Pointers, who
lost to UW-River Falls for the third straight time after beating the
Falcons in the first 15 meetings of the series. The Pointers are now
7-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the WIAC, while UW-River Falls kept its
conference title hopes alive with a 8-3-2 overall record
and 5-1 league mark. |
