Pointers Settle For Tie With UW-Platteville

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point has still never lost to UW-Platteville in womens soccer, but for the first time in 21 all-time meetings the Pointers failed to come away with a victory over the Pioneers.

UW-Platteville scored just its third goal in the history of the series with less than 15 minutes remaining in the second half and then held off UW-Stevens Point through two overtimes as the teams battled to a 1-1 tie on Sunday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

The Pointers owned a 37-5 advantage in shots, but managed to put just 11 of its shots on goal as UW-Platteville goalkeeper Laurie Trifone made 10 saves in the victory. Two of Trifones saves came in double overtime, tipping a high shot from Liz Kidd over the crossbar early in the period and then stuffing Amanda Prawat at the top of the penalty box on a breakaway midway through the frame.

UW-Platteville nearly pulled off the victory itself as the Pioneers had a breakaway in the final two minutes and Elisa Schulenberg scored the apparent game-winning goal. However, the Pioneers were ruled offsides. UW-Stevens Point came away with a two-on-one breakaway of its own in the closing seconds, but Katie Watermans shot sailed just over the crossbar.

The Pointers had another of their best scoring chances early in the match as Prawat had an open look from about 15 yards away, but rang a hard shot off the post. UW-Stevens Point had another close call with five minutes to go in the first half as Anna Van Stippens shot from close range bounced off the crossbar.

UW-Stevens Point finally broke the deadlock on its first corner kick opportunity of the match with 28:05 left when Waterman sent a ball to the top of the penalty box that Prawat controlled and ripped into the lower corner at the far post.

UW-Platteville, which put four of its five shots on goal, came back to tie the match when Allie Metcalfe broke free and sent a nifty pass to Kim Schneckloth, who lofted a perfect ball into the upper right corner at the far post. Meredith DeCaluwe made saves on the Pioneers other three shots on goal.

The tie extended both teams unbeaten streaks as UW-Platteville hasnt lost in its last seven matches and UW-Stevens Point is undefeated in its last six. Both teams are now 5-1-2 overall.
