Early Goals Set Tone as Pointers Roll Past Gusties

Box Score

Two early goals set the tone and UW-Stevens Point never let up in rolling to a 5-0 non-conference womens soccer victory over Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

The Pointers converted their first offensive opportunity of the match as Alison Regal drilled a low shot under a diving Gusties keeper Ashley Ohlson just 53 seconds into the game. Regal scored after Amanda Prawats long throw-in came to her at the top of the penalty box.

UW-Stevens Point added another goal less than 18 minutes later as Prawat made some nifty individual moves inside the penalty box to elude two defenders and then launched another low shot in the corner of the goal for a 2-0 advantage.

The Pointers kept up their offensive attack with a three-goal flurry in a span of four minutes and 10 seconds in the second half. Kayle Weise started the outbreak, taking a through ball from Anna Van Stippen and depositing it in the lower corner. Just over a minute later, Weise collected a ball on a breakout and sent a perfect cross to Prawat, who settled the ball near the top of the box and placed the shot in the upper corner at the near post for a 4-0 advantage.

The Pointers added a fifth goal less than three minutes later as Van Stippen attempted a cross that deflected off a Gusties defender and into the net for an own goal.

UW-Stevens Point held a 20-6 advantage in shots as the Pointers defense limited its eighth straight opponent to fewer than 10 shots. The Pointers posted their fifth shutout of the year as goalkeeper Meredith DeCaluwe was tested with only one shot on goal, coming with three minutes left.

It was a rare outcome for a series that has been traditionally tight and was the largest margin of victory by either side in 14 meetings. In fact, the Pointers avenged a 3-1 loss to the Gusties from last season. Gustavus Adolphus also had not allowed more than three goals in a match this season and suffered just its second of its seven losses by more than one goal.

UW-Stevens Point is now 8-3-2 overall, while the Gusties fell to 5-7-2 overall.
