Pointers Clinch
WIAC Tournament Berth With Tie
UW-Stevens Point clinched a berth in the
four-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason
tournament after a 0-0 tie on Wednesday at UW-Whitewater.
The Pointers and Warhawks played 90 minutes of
regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods before settling for the
deadlock. UW-Stevens Point could have clinched its seventh straight WIAC
title with a win, but now UW-River Falls takes its first-ever title and
will host the tournament on Nov. 7-8.
UW-Stevens Point will be the No. 2 seed for the
tournament and play third-seeded UW-La Crosse on Friday at 2 p.m. UW-River
Falls meets UW-Oshkosh in the other semifinal at 11 a.m.
The Pointers finished the conference season at
11-3-3 overall and with a 5-1-2 conference record, allowing only two goals
in conference play both coming in a 2-1 overtime loss to UW-La Crosse
last week.
The tie snaps UW-Stevens Points 17-match
winning streak over the Warhawks, dating to the first-ever meeting between
the schools when they played to a 2-2 tie in 1987. UW-Stevens Point
outshot UW-Whitewater 14-3, but Warhawks goalie Jamie Carollo made 11
saves. Melissa Meister stopped two shots for the Pointers.
It was the Pointers third scoreless tie this
season, despite having played a total of only three scoreless ties in the
previous 16 years of the program.
UW-Stevens Point will play at Gustavus Adolphus
in a non-conference match on Sunday at 2 p.m. |
