Tie Ends
Pointers NCAA Record Winning Streak
Box Score
The longest conference winning streak in NCAA
soccer history came to an end on Wednesday, but another streak stayed
intact for the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team.
A 0-0 stalemate at UW-Oshkosh ended the
Pointers all-divisions NCAA record streak at 70 consecutive conference
wins, which includes 52 straight regular season victories and 18
conference tournament wins since a 4-1 defeat to UW-La Crosse in the WIAC
tournament finals on Oct. 27,
1996. However, the Pointers have still never lost a conference regular
season match, holding an 83-0-3 record against Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference in-season competition. The last regular season tie was
the final match of the 1996 season, also against UW-La Crosse in a 1-1
deadlock.
It marks the first time
UW-Stevens Point has ever been shutout in its 117 matches against WIAC
opponents, including conference tournaments. The Pointers are 113-1-3
all-time against conference foes.
UW-Stevens Point controlled much of the match,
holding a 20-7 advantage in shots, including a 7-1 margin in the 20-minute
overtime period. Melissa Meister made five saves for the Pointers, who
still havent allowed a goal in five conference matches this season. Sara
Tomjanovich stopped six shots for the Titans.
The Pointers began the streak on Sept. 13, 1997
with a 3-2 win over UW-River Falls and had four overtime victories during
the stretch. The second-longest streak was North Carolinas 55-match
Atlantic Coast Conference winning streak from 1994-2000. With the tie,
UW-Stevens Point still holds the longest conference unbeaten streak in
NCAA history, which now stands at 71 consecutive matches.
Wednesdays match was also the Pointers
first-ever tie against the Titans since their varsity program began 11
years ago. UW-Stevens Point is now 9-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the WIAC.. |
