Loses First-Ever Conference Regular Season Match

UW-Stevens Point suffered its first-ever
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss in the 12-year history
of the league with a 2-1 double overtime defeat at the hands of UW-La
Crosse on Saturday in Stevens Point.
The Eagles� Kris Miller took a pass from Cynthia
Fudzinski and scored with 4:27 left in double overtime to give the Eagles
the historic victory.
UW-Stevens Point�s all-time regular season
conference record now stands at 84-1-3. The Eagles are the only WIAC team
to ever beat the Pointers, also taking a 4-1 win in the 1996 conference
tournament finals. UW-Stevens Point is 114-2-3 in all matches against WIAC
opponents, including tournaments, and had the longest conference unbeaten
streak in NCAA history and all divisions snapped at 72 matches in the
loss.
The Pointers held a 15-3 advantage in shots in
the first half, but UW-La Crosse keeper Stephanie Harbaugh kept the match
scoreless with eight first half saves. The Pointers had four of the first
five shots of the second half and converted 10 minutes into the period
when Katie O�Leary took a free kick that Jenny Bruce headed in for a 1-0
lead.
UW-La Crosse tied the match with 17:29 left on
an unassisted goal by Ashley Marshall. UW-Stevens Point responded with a
shot less than three minutes later, but it would be the Pointers� final
scoring chance of the match as the Eagles outshot the Pointers 4-0 over
the final 30 minutes.
UW-Stevens Point was ranked 23rd in the latest
NCAA Division III poll and had its six-match unbeaten streak snapped,
falling to 11-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point needs a
victory at UW-Whitewater on Wednesday to clinch the conference title. The Eagles extended their unbeaten
streak to seven straight matches and are now 8-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in
the WIAC. |
