Pointers and Wheaton Hook Up for Another Classic

Meeting for the fifth time in three seasons, UW-Stevens Point and Wheaton College hooked up in another classic duel with the match ending in a 2-2 draw.

The Pointers rallied from two one-goal deficits with breakaway goals from Kelly Fink to get the draw and extend their home unbeaten streak to 23 straight matches. UW-Stevens Point is now 27-2-2 in its last 31 matches with both losses and a tie coming to Wheaton. The Pointers (9-0-2) are ranked No. 2 in the latest Division III rankings and Wheaton (8-1-3) is ranked 15th.

The Thunder scored just 3:27 into the match when three-time All-American Rebecca Mouw gathered a pass from Jen Binger wide open in front of the goal and drilled the shot for a 1-0 lead.

Wheaton had eight of the first 10 shot attempts of the match, but the Pointers finally got going offensively when Emma-klara Porter sent a long pass downfield that Kelly Fink chased down and fired past Thunder goalie Brita Nelson to the far post to tie the match. Both teams hit the crossbar with shots in the ensuing 10 minutes and Fink lofted a long shot that appeared to have gone in the goal, but bounced off a standard behind the goal and back over the top.

The fast-paced action was back-and-forth throughout the entire second half and 20 minutes of overtime with Wheaton finally taking a 2-1 lead at the 65:29 mark when Jessica Elsen took the ball to the the top corner of the penalty box and fired a low shot to the far post under Pointers keeper Kortney Krill.

UW-Stevens Point rallied quickly with several great opportunities to tie the match, but Wheaton reserve goalie Ashley Vratil came up with saves each time. At the 78:08 mark, the Pointers scored in a similar fashion to their first goal when Porter slid a pass through two defenders to a streaking Fink, who beat Vratil for her 10th goal of the year.

Both teams had several quality scoring chances in a frantic final 10 minutes before overtime. Each team also had two shots in overtime with the Pointers getting the only shot on goal from Porter in the final minute. UW-Stevens Point outshot the Thunder 18-17 and both teams had six corner kicks. Krill made four saves for the Pointers, while Vratil stopped six shots for Wheaton.

The Pointers take a week off before hosting UW-Stout in a WIAC match on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
