Pointers Beat UW-Eau Claire for Seventh Straight Victory

UW-Stevens Point gained the inside track toward its 10th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens soccer title in 11 years with a 3-1 win over UW-Eau Claire Wednesday in Eau Claire.

Both teams entered the match undefeated in conference play, but the Pointers jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead and played a strong defensive second half in a steady rain to improve to 9-0-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The overall record marks the best start in Pointer history as they recorded their seventh straight win. UW-Eau Claire fell to 9-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the WIAC.

The Pointers scored first at the 18:42 mark when Andrea Spiel dribbled to the corner and sent a cross in front that Emma-klara Porter headed in for her third goal of the season.

The Blugolds tied the match less than three minutes later as the ball skipped on the wet grass and bounced over the head of Pointers goalkeeper Kortney Krill. Kris Unterweger put home the loose ball to tie the match.

UW-Stevens Point responded at the 35:07 mark when Jenny Bruce chipped a free kick from the top of the box over the defense and Molly Cady sliced through to poke the ball past Blugolds keeper Megan Brady to score for the fifth straight match. Bruce added another goal five minutes later off a pass from Porter to give the Pointers a 3-1 advantage. Bruces goal made her the sixth player in Pointer history to reach 100 career points.

The victory extended UW-Stevens Points NCAA record conference winning streak to 60 straight matches. The Pointers are ranked second in the Division III rankings, while UW-Eau Claire entered the match ranked 25th in the country. UW-Stevens Point faces ninth-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
