Pointers
Defeat
UW-Platteville in WIAC Quarterfinals
Jenny Bruce scored or assisted on
all five of UW-Stevens
Points second half goals as the Pointers advanced into the semifinals
of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 6-0
win over UW-Platteville Tuesday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
Bruce scored a goal just 1:23 into the second half off a pass from Mickey
Jacob to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead at the time. Eight minutes later,
she found Alyssa Souza in front of the net and then later sent a cross
that Kelly Fink headed in to give the Pointers a 4-0 lead.
Bruce
scored a breakaway goal with an assist from Melissa Becker at the 72:31
mark and two minutes later, Becker scored her first goal of the season off
a corner kick by Bruce for a 6-0 advantage. Bruces three assists tie an
all-time WIAC tournament single-match record.
The
Pointers led just 1-0 at halftime as Fink scored the lone first half goal
with an assist from Jacob. The sophomore now has 21 goals this season,
making her just the second player in UW-Stevens Point history to score
over 20 goals in a season. Marie Muhvic accomplished the feat three times.
The
Pointers held a 28-0 advantage in shots, firing 14 attempts in each half.
UW-Stevens
Point will host fifth-seed UW-Whitewater Friday at 11 a.m. in the
semifinals. The Warhawks won at UW-La Crosse 2-1 on Tuesday. UW-Oshkosh
and UW-Eau Claire will meet in the other semifinal at 2 p.m. The
championship match is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pointer Soccer
Bowl.
