UW-Stevens Point Clinches Fifth Straight WIAC Title

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer championship trophy will rest in Stevens Point for the fifth straight year and ninth time in the conferences 10-year history after UW-Stevens Point defeated UW-Platteville 6-0 Friday in Platteville.

The Pointers jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and outshot the Pioneers 26-1 in cruising to the victory. UW-Stevens Point is now 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the WIAC. The Pointers have a conference match remaining Tuesday at UW-Stout, but would still claim the title and the top seed for the postseason tournament even with a loss. Picture (132x160, 13.6Kb)

Freshman Mollie Kreibich scored her first goal of the season 15:50 into the match on a shot from 35 yards out that sailed into the upper corner of the net. Kreibich also assisted on the next goal by Andrea Oswald to start a string of three goals in a nine-minute span as Kelly Fink and Renee DeBroux each found the net as well.

Oswald scored her second goal just three minutes into the second half and Molly Cady scored with just under 30 minutes remaining to finish the scoring. Jenny Bruce assisted on two of the Pointers goals and Kim Reese assisted Oswalds goal.

UW-Stevens Point has now outscored its seven WIAC opponents 42-1 this season, while holding a 225-21 advantage in shots. The Pointers improved to 14-0 all-time against UW-Platteville, outscoring the Pioneers 93-1 in the 14 meetings.

The conference tournament will begin with the quarterfinal round on Oct. 23 and the Pointers will likely host the winner of Saturdays match between UW-Platteville and UW-Superior.
