Pointers Extend Win Streak in Conference-Opening Victory

Jenny Bruce scored two goals and Sarah Menzel added two assists as the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team extended the longest conference winning streak in NCAA Division III history to 45 matches with a 3-1 victory over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

The win improved the Pointers to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-La Crosse fell to 0-3-2 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point is ranked third in the nation and first in the Central Region.

The Pointers peppered the Eagles net with 18 shots before Bruce finally broke through with a goal off a rebound at the 33:05 mark of the first half. UW-Stevens Point outshot the Eagles 39-4 for the match and 20-1 in the first half.

Bruce added another goal just 40 seconds into the second half when she took a pass from Menzel and scored for a 2-0 lead. Just three minutes later, Menzel sent a cross in front of the net that Molly Cady knocked home for a 3-0 lead.

Menzels assists marked the first career points in 31 matches for the former Stevens Point Area Senior High standout, who is one of the teams top defenders.

UW-La Crosse scored its goal at the 70:11 mark of the match when Amanda Feutzs shot deflected off a Pointer defender to the far post and past UW-Stevens Point goalie Brianna Hyslop.

Hyslop had two saves for the Pointers and Jessica Gammey stopped 16 shots for the Eagles.

UW-Stevens Point will travel to 24th ranked University of Chicago Sunday at 2 p.m. The Pointers home match with UW-Superior that was scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Wed., Sept. 26.
