Second Half Spurt Pushes Pointers Past
Edgewood
Three goals in the first three minutes of the second half sparked
the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team to a 6-0 win over Edgewood
Monday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
The Pointers, who are ranked third in Mondays NCAA Division III
national rankings, improved to 6-0 for the season, tying the teams best
start ever, which was also accomplished in 1995.
Kelly Fink scored three goals for UW-Stevens Point, including the
teams only goal of the first half at the 16:08 mark.
Jenny Bruce started the second half scoring with an unassisted goal
one minute into the half for a 2-0 lead. Andrea Oswald came back with a
goal in the next minute, and 27 seconds later Fink scored an unassisted
tally.
Fink, a sophomore forward, scored her third goal at the 68:27 mark
and Molly Cady added the Pointers final goal at the 76:14 mark. Of the
Pointers 26 goals this season, 18 have come in the second half.
UW-Stevens Point outshot the Eagles 38-3 in a rematch of last
seasons NCAA tournament first round match. The Pointers held the Eagles
without a shot for the first 42:30 of the match, snapping a streak of 151
consecutive minutes without allowing an opponent shot attempt. Brianna
Hyslop had saves on all three Edgewood shots.
The Pointers will host UW-Superior Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a
rescheduled game from a postponement
earlier this season.
