Fink's Overtime Goal Lifts Pointers
Past UW-Eau Claire
Kelly Fink scored the only goal of the match 2:40
into overtime to lead the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team past
UW-Eau Claire Wednesday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.
The Pointers are now 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the WIAC,
having won 25 of their last 26 matches. UW-Stevens Point has also won 13
straight at home and is 17-0-1 in the last eight meetings with UW-Eau
Claire.
UW-Stevens Point nearly scored in the first minute of
extra time as Andrea Oswald had a free kick from 25 yards out that hit off
the crossbar. UW-Eau Claire gained possession and took the ball to the
other end of the field when the Pointer defense cleared the ball to Fink
at midfield. The sophomore dribbled through three defenders before lofting
the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. It was Finks 12th
goal of the season and she has now scored in eight of the teams nine
matches.
UW-Stevens Point outshot the Blugolds 17-5 and posted
its fifth straight shutout. The Pointers also held a 12-0 advantage in
corner kicks. Brianna Hyslop made two saves, including a diving stop of a
shot by the Blugolds Nikki Johnston with 10 minutes left.
Oswald also had an opportunity earlier in the second
half when UW-Eau Claire goalie Megan Brady was out of the net, however, a
Blugolds defender recovered to clear the shot before it crossed the
goal line.
The match marked the first time a WIAC opponent has
taken the Pointers to overtime in a regular season match since a 1-1 tie
against UW-La Crosse on Oct. 19, 1996. The Pointers are now 68-0-2
all-time in WIAC regular season competition.
UW-Stevens Point, which is ranked third in Division
III, travels to face eighth-ranked Wheaton
(Ill.) Friday at 4:30 p.m.
