Defeat Blugolds To Capture WIAC Tournament and NCAA Berth
Margaret Domka had a pair of free kicks that resulted in goals and a
victory for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women's soccer team as
the Pointers beat UW-Eau Claire 2-0 for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference tournament title Saturday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl in
Stevens Point.
The Pointers are now 18-4 overall and won their school-record 12th
straight match, while also clinching an automatic berth to the NCAA Division
III playoffs. The berth is the fourth straight for the Pointers and seventh
in eight seasons. Pairings will be announced late Sunday night.
UW-Stevens Point has now won eight of the nine WIAC tournaments and
boasts a 24-1 all-time WIAC tournament record. Six of the nine championship
match wins have come over UW-Eau Claire.
Domka had a long free kick in the first half that was stopped by
Blugolds' goalie Chandra Butterfield. However, Butterfield lost control of
the ball and Pointers' midfielder Mickey Jacob scored for a 1-0 lead at the
36:54 mark.
The second Pointers' goal was similar to the first as Domka took
another long free kick that Marie Muhvic knocked in for her 70th
career goal. UW-Eau Claire had been pressuring the Pointers' net for most of
the second half before UW-Stevens Point broke free for the goal. The
Blugolds outshot the Pointers 20-10, including a 13-3 margin in the second
half.
Abby Rabinovitz made 10 saves for the shutout for the Pointers.
Butterfield made five saves for UW-Eau Claire.
