WIAC Women’s Soccer Semifinals – Oct. 29, 1999

UW-La Crosse 3, UW-River Falls 1

Two goals in the first 10 minutes sparked UW-La Crosse to a 3-1 victory over UW-River Falls in a semifinal game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament Friday in Stevens Point.

The Eagles advance to face UW-Stevens Point, which defeated UW-Eau Claire 2-0 in the other semifinal, in Saturday’s title game at 1 p.m. The matchup is a rematch of the 1996 title game won by UW-La Crosse 4-1, the only time UW-Stevens Point has failed to win the title in the eight-year history of the conference sport.

Jessica Manchester scored the Eagles’ first goal just 4:39 into the match with an assist from Jennifer Tischaefer. Five minutes later, Tischaefer scored to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead on a diving header off a pass from Rachel Vanderlinden.

Tischaefer made it 3-0 at the 57:08 mark with her 19th goal of the season, a tip-in off a long pass from Melinda Kadar.

UW-River Falls scored its only goal at 71:28 when Anne Butters took a pass from Cristin Ferguson and scored on a two-on-one break.

UW-La Crosse (12-5) outshot the Falcons (12-10) 20-19 and avenged a 2-0 loss earlier in the season. Sara Hachey stopped eight shots for UW-River Falls and Jessica Gammey had seven saves for the Eagles.
