UW-Stevens Point swept
a doubleheader from the nations top-ranked team on Friday, but
UW-Whitewater came back to post two wins on Saturday and claim the
WIAC regular season title. The teams will battle again this
weekend with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville for the WIAC postseason
tournament in Wisconsin Rapids.
The Pointers are the
second seed and play third-seeded UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. on Friday.
It marks the fourth straight year that the Pointers and Titans
have met in the opening round. The title game is set for 3 p.m. on
Saturday.
UW-Stevens Point
amassed 31 runs and 35 hits in Fridays sweep, beating the
Warhawks 10-0 and 21-8. However, UW-Whitewaters top two pitchers
limited the Pointers to three runs and 11 hits on Saturday in 5-3
and 5-0 wins.
Chuck Brehm (Spencer,
WI) was eight-for-16 for the weekend and hit his fourth grand slam
of the season in the second game on Friday as the Pointers slugged
six home runs in the win. Steve Wiczek (Stevens Point, WI) was
seven-for-14 for the week and hit two home runs. Joel Hojnacki
(Plover, WI) also homered twice and Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI)
hit one homer as both finished six-for-14 for the weekend.
J.C. Reinke (Bonduel,
WI) tossed a two-hit complete game shutout in Fridays opening
game victory. He had a no-hitter until two outs in the fifth
inning for his second straight shutout.

The Pointers played
four games on Saturday and fell one game short of the title game
at the WIAC tournament in Whitewater.
UW-Stevens Point
opened with a 3-0 win over UW-Superior and then lost to UW-Eau
Claire 4-2 in eight innings, sending the Pointers into the losers
bracket. They beat UW-River Falls 2-1 and UW-Oshkosh 4-1 before
losing to UW-Stout 1-0. Earlier in the week, the Pointers lost two
games to Winona State 4-3 and 4-0.
Kelly Jablonski
(Stevens Point, WI) pitched a shutout and Stephanie Anderson
(Milwaukee, WI) homered in the opening round win over UW-Superior.
The Pointers then
held a 1-0 lead over UW-Eau Claire in the top of the seventh
inning and Blugolds loaded the bases with none out. Jablonski
recorded a pair of strikeouts, but a passed ball following the
second strikeout allowed the tying run to score. UW-Eau Claire
scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth and the
Pointers mounted a rally with a Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI)
home run in the bottom of the inning before falling short.
UW-Stevens Point
ousted UW-River Falls 2-1 in the next round as Bauer drove in the
game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Melissa Boldt (New
Berlin, WI) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead in the fifth before the
Falcons tied the game in the top of the sixth. Anderson scattered
six hits for the win.
The Pointers
rallied from behind to beat UW-Oshkosh in the next game. After
Korryn Brooks (Stevens Point, WI) tied the game with a run-scoring
double in the fourth, Laura Van Abel (Kaukauna, WI) slugged a
two-run homer for a 3-1 lead and then added an RBI double in the
sixth. Jablonski allowed six hits for the victory.
UW-Stout hit a solo
home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the
win in the final game. It was one of only four hits off Anderson,
while the Pointers had six hits and runners in all but one inning.
