BASEBALL (21-4 overall, 13-3 WIAC)

The Pointers went 5-1 over the week, sweeping a doubleheader from UW-Oshkosh and taking three of four games from UW-La Crosse to put themselves in position for a WIAC championship with eight games remaining.

UW-Stevens Point plays six non-conference games this week with a doubleheader at Lakeland on Monday and home games on Saturday and Sunday against Ripon and Marian.

The Pointers beat UW-Oshkosh 5-1 and 16-4 on Wednesday and beat UW-La Crosse 3-2 and 15-4 on Saturday to run their winning streak to 14 straight games. The Eagles won Sunday�s opener 7-0, but the Pointers rallied for a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.

Chuck Brehm (Spencer, WI) hit .450 for the week and Joel Hojnacki (Plover, WI) hit .429 over the six games. Ryan Byrnes (Beaver Dam, WI) hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap against UW-Oshkosh and had a grand slam in the first inning of the second game on Sunday.

J.C. Reinke (Bonduel, WI) pitched a complete game victory in the opener against UW-Oshkosh and Jordan Zimmermann threw seven and one-third innings for the victory in the opening game against UW-La Crosse.

 

SOFTBALL (15-8 overall, 5-4 WIAC)

UW-Stevens Point went 6-3 for the week, sweeping doubleheaders from UW-Whitewater and Northland before winning games over UW-La Crosse and UW-Eau Claire over the weekend.

The Pointers beat UW-Whitewater 2-0 and 2-1 and swept Northland 6-4 and 8-0. In the WIAC Cluster in Oshkosh over the weekend, the Pointers lost to UW-Superior 4-3, beat UW-La Crosse 8-1 and lost to UW-Stout 1-0 on Saturday. On Sunday, they beat seventh-ranked UW-Eau Claire 3-0 and lost to UW-River Falls 5-4 in 10 innings.

The Pointers have six more games this week, including a conference doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday.

Stephanie Anderson (Milwaukee, WI) had a big week at the plate and on the mound for the Pointers. She hit .387 (12-for-31) with five doubles and 10 RBIs, while also striking out 30 batters and allowing just 11 hits and two earned runs in 28 and two-thirds innings.

Jenny Feidt (Kimberly, WI) hit .379 (11-for-29) for the week and scored eight runs. Kelly Jablonski (Stevens Point, WI) pitched 22 innings with 20 strikeouts and allowed just three earned runs while posting shutouts over UW-Whitewater and UW-Eau Claire.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

    The UW-Stevens Point women had five event winners and placed third among 14 teams at Saturday�s UW-Eau Claire Open. The Pointer men�s team had no individual champions as no men�s team scores were kept.

    Julia Slabosheski (Princeton, WI) was the women�s discus winner with an NCAA Division III provisional throw of 142 feet, six inches, while also placing second in the javelin and third in the shot put. Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) edged teammate Megan Craig (Bangor, WI) in the 1500-meter run by less than two seconds with a winning time of 4:41.94.

    Marie Burrows (Menomonee Falls, WI) captured the 200-meter dash title in 25.95 seconds and Ashleigh Potuznik (Baraboo, WI) won the 3000-meter steeplechase by nearly a full minute in 11:32.48. The women�s 4x400-meter relay team was also victorious with a time of 4:04.83. Liz Goergen (Apple Valley, MN) was second in the 100-meter hurdles and had an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 15.06 seconds.

Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) had the highest finish in any event on the men�s side, placing second in the 1,500-meter run at 3:57.73.

The Pointers will compete this weekend at the Augustana Meet of Champions in Rock Island, Ill.
