BASEBALL (16-3 overall, 8-2 WIAC)

    The Pointers extended their winning streak to 10 straight games and enter a week of six home games red-hot at the plate, having scored in double figures in nine consecutive games.

UW-Stevens Point is ranked 18th in the country and hosts ninth-ranked UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday in a doubleheader that was switched to Stevens Point after the teams� first meeting was moved to Oshkosh two weeks ago. The Pointers also host UW-La Crosse in a four-game series over the weekend. The Pointers added a doubleheader to the schedule on Monday, April 18 at Lakeland in Sheboygan.

UW-Stevens Point opened last week by sweeping St. Norbert 13-1 and 13-2 before taking four games from UW-Platteville over the weekend. The Pointers won Saturday�s games 11-10 and 13-2 and took Sunday�s games 11-8 and 20-6. UW-Stevens Point is hitting .347 as a team and averaging 11 runs per game.

Chuck Brehm (Spencer, WI) had a huge week, going 13-for-25 at the plate with four home runs and 16 RBI�s, including two grand slams in the UW-Platteville series. Ryan Byrnes (Beaver Dam, WI) was seven-for-12 for the week with nine RBI�s, while Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI) was 11-for-23 for the week and Steve Wiczek (Stevens Point, WI) was 10-for-22 with 13 RBI�s over the six games.

Senior Matt Polomis (Wausaukee, WI) made his first career pitching start in the second game against St. Norbert and had a complete game two-hitter, allowing only two solo home runs.

The Pointers split their conference opener with UW-Platteville last week and have a busy week coming up with nine games, including four mid-week home games.

UW-Stevens Point beat UW-Platteville 7-2 last week, but saw the Pioneers come back for a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Friday�s scheduled home doubleheader with Edgewood was moved to Thursday, April 28.

Rebekah Bauer (Stevens Point, WI) went four-for-four and Kelly Jablonski (Plover, WI) pitched a complete game victory in the opening game win last week. Jenny Feidt (Kimberly, WI) was two-for-four in the second game.

This week, the Pointers host UW-Whitewater on Tuesday at McCarty Field and then play Northland in two games at home on Thursday. UW-Stevens Point will take part in the WIAC Cluster in Oshkosh over the weekend with three games on Saturday and two on Sunday.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

     UW-Stevens Point dominated both men�s hurdles events and amassed enough team points to capture the team title at Saturday�s Coldman Invitational in Stevens Point.

     The Pointers had six of the top seven finishers in the 110-meter hurdles with Cory Christnovich (Neenah, WI) winning in 15.18 seconds and six of the top eight places in the 400-meter hurdles with Paul Schliepp (Redgranite, WI) taking first in 55.99 seconds. Kyle Steiner (Grafton, WI) was second in both events as UW-Stevens Point totaled 231 points with UW-Oshkosh placing second with 204.5 points.

     UW-Stevens Point�s women�s team placed fourth with 118.5 points as UW-Oshkosh won the team title with 196 points. The meet featured 17 teams.

     Bryan Buechel (New Holstein, WI) was the lone double-winner for the men, claiming the triple jump in 43 feet, 5.25 inches and the 200-meter dash in 22.92 seconds. Ryan Shepard (Cornell, WI) captured the high jump in six feet, 6.25 inches.

     Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) was the lone individual winner for the women, taking the 5000-meter run in 17:51.67. The 4x400-meter relay team also was victorious in 4:02.40.

     UW-Stevens Point�s men�s and women�s teams will both compete this weekend at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational.
