UW-Stevens Point
Captures WIAC All-Sports Trophy and Women�s Award
UW-Stevens Point capped a successful 2004-05 athletics season by
capturing the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-sports
trophy for the second time in the eight-year history of the award.
UW-Stevens Point also won the women�s all-sports award for the first time
and placed second in the men�s all-sports standings.
Pointer teams claimed six conference championships during the past
year. UW-Stevens Point also had four runner-up teams and five third place
squads among its 20 sports. The school compiled an 81-36-2 record in WIAC
competition for a .689 winning percentage. Overall, UW-Stevens Point teams
were 191-73-5 for a .719 winning percentage for the year.
�It was another great year for Pointer athletics and these awards speak
for the quality of coaches and student-athletes we are fortunate to have at
UW-Stevens Point,� athletics director Frank O�Brien said. �I�m especially
excited for our women�s programs winning the award for the first time and
the deserved recognition for their achievements.�
On the women�s side, UW-Stevens Point won titles in cross country,
soccer and basketball, while finishing runner-up in swimming and diving and
third in softball, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. The
Pointers totaled 48.5 points to edge four other league schools that
accumulated at least 40 points. UW-Oshkosh was second with 45 points. In
addition to its WIAC success, UW-Stevens Point also captured the Northern
Collegiate Hockey Association women�s ice hockey championship.
UW-Stevens Point�s men�s teams won titles in swimming and diving and
basketball, while placing second in football, wrestling and baseball. The
Pointers were third in cross country and ice hockey and finished with 33.5
points. UW-La Crosse won the award with 37 points. UW-Stevens Point had won
the men�s award six of the last eight years.
In the overall standings, UW-Stevens Point totaled 84 points for a
three-point margin over UW-La Crosse. UW-Stevens Point also claimed the
conference�s overall award in 2000. |
