UW-Stevens Point Captures WIAC All-Sports Trophy and Womens Award

UW-Stevens Point capped a successful 2004-05 athletics season by capturing the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-sports trophy for the second time in the eight-year history of the award. UW-Stevens Point also won the womens all-sports award for the first time and placed second in the mens all-sports standings.

Pointer teams claimed six conference championships during the past year. UW-Stevens Point also had four runner-up teams and five third place squads among its 20 sports. The school compiled an 81-36-2 record in WIAC competition for a .689 winning percentage. Overall, UW-Stevens Point teams were 191-73-5 for a .719 winning percentage for the year.

It was another great year for Pointer athletics and these awards speak for the quality of coaches and student-athletes we are fortunate to have at UW-Stevens Point, athletics director Frank OBrien said. Im especially excited for our womens programs winning the award for the first time and the deserved recognition for their achievements.

On the womens side, UW-Stevens Point won titles in cross country, soccer and basketball, while finishing runner-up in swimming and diving and third in softball, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. The Pointers totaled 48.5 points to edge four other league schools that accumulated at least 40 points. UW-Oshkosh was second with 45 points. In addition to its WIAC success, UW-Stevens Point also captured the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association womens ice hockey championship.

UW-Stevens Points mens teams won titles in swimming and diving and basketball, while placing second in football, wrestling and baseball. The Pointers were third in cross country and ice hockey and finished with 33.5 points. UW-La Crosse won the award with 37 points. UW-Stevens Point had won the mens award six of the last eight years.
