POINTER NOTES

Mens Basketball Back on Top of National Rankings

The UW-Stevens Point mens basketball team is again the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III national rankings by D3hoops.com after one week in the No. 2 spot.

The Pointers, who are 13-1 overall, received all 25 first place votes and took over for Wooster (Ohio), which suffered its first loss of the season to Wittenberg (Ohio) on Saturday. UW-Stevens Point posted a 77-42 win over UW-Superior in its most recent outing and was the No. 1 team for the first six weeks of the season.

The Pointers host 25th-ranked UW-Oshkosh tonight at 7 p.m. at the Quandt Fieldhouse.

Lunneborg and Pettis Named Conference Athletes of the Week

For the fourth time in five weeks UW-Stevens Point landed the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association womens hockey Player of the Week as Kim Lunneborg earned the honor following the Pointers sweep of Lake Forest last week. Pointers diver Chad Pettis was also honored as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference mens diving Athlete of the Week.

Lunneborg, a junior forward from Richfield, Minn., was involved in five of the teams six goals in the Pointers sweep. She had a goal and two assists in Sundays 3-0 win and also posted a goal and an assist in Fridays 3-1 victory. Four different UW-Stevens Point players have now earned the NCHA honor over the past five weeks.

Pettis, a junior from Eau Claire Memorial High School, won both the one-meter and three-meter events at Sundays UW-Oshkosh Invitational. He easily claimed the three-meter crown, scoring 394.75 points to finish more than 71 points ahead of the second-place diver. In the one-meter event, Pettis totaled 384.15 points.
