POINTER NOTES

UW-Stevens Point Lands Three WIAC Athlete of the Week Winners

Three UW-Stevens Point athletes earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors for their performances during the past week.

Receiving the honor for the first time in their careers were junior wrestler Joel Burdick and freshman swimmer Ben Gensler. Senior Julia Slabosheski also received the honor in womens indoor track and field events.

Burdick won both of his matches this week, defeating a Division II wrestler and a Division III All-American. Burdick defeated Larry Silva of UW-Parkside in the Pointers dual meet victory on Wednesday. He then edged sixth-ranked Nick Karls of UW-Whitewater 3-2.

Gensler broke a 10-year old Mitchell Hall record in the Pointers dual meet with UW-La Crosse. Gensler swam the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:07.79, smashing the previous record by nearly two seconds. Genslers time eclipsed the NCAAs B-cut qualifying standard for the national meet. He also finished third in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.16.

Slabosheski reached the NCAAs provisional qualifying mark in the shot put in her first meet of the season. Slabosheski threw the shot 43 feet, 0.25 inches to win the event. She also placed 10th in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 40 feet, 2.75 inches.
