Softball Wins Three Games in One Day to Close Florida Trip

     Karen Guckenberger earned two wins and a save in one day on Friday as the UW-Stevens Point softball team won three games to close out its spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla. with a 6-4 record.

     The Pointers opened the day with a 5-4 win over Southern Maine and an 8-4 triumph over Kalamazoo (Mich.) before beating Southern Maine 7-3 late Friday night for the sweep.

     Guckenberger went seven innings in relief in the first game, allowing just three hits and striking out five batters. Meagan Strmsek was two-for-four with three RBI�s, while Jenni Van Cuyk and Casey Schipferling were both two-for-three.

     Katie Knoeder picked up the win over Kalamazoo with two innings in relief of starter Erin Penza. Guckenberger pitched the final two innings, striking out five batters. The Pointers opened the game with three runs in the seventh inning on a triple by Amy Schumacher and back-to-back doubles by Kristen Sorenson and Strmsek.

     Guckenberger pitched the final two and two-thirds innings in the nightcap as the Pointers had no players with two hits or more. UW-Stevens Point scored five runs in the fourth inning on five singles.

     The Pointers are scheduled to open their northern schedule Sat., March 29 against St. Norbert at 1 p.m. at McCarty Field.

     The Pointers have a day off Wednesday before playing Buffalo Sate (N.Y.) and Endicott (Mass.) on Thursday.
