Softball Rolls Past Worcester State to Even Record at 2-2

Meagan Strmsek and Amy Schumacher both had two-run singles in a five-run second inning as the UW-Stevens Point softball team rolled past Worcester State (Mass.) 9-3 on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla. to even its record at 2-2.

The Pointers lost their opening game of the day 4-0 to 14th-ranked Wheaton (Mass.), despite a three-hitter by Karen Guckenberger as the Lyons took advantage of Pointer errors to score four unearned runs. Strmsek was two-for-three as the Pointers totaled five hits in the loss.

In the second game, Jill Van Wychen was three-for-four and Carrie Hermsen and Lena Hubbard each went two-for-two to lead the Pointers. Katie Knoedler allowed one run in three innings of relief to earn the victory, while Guckenberger struck out all three batters she faced in the seventh inning to close out the game. Starting pitcher Jeanann Briski allowed two runs in three innings.

The Pointers take on Northern Colorado and New York University on Tuesday.
