UW-Stevens Point prepares for this weekend�s WIAC tournament in Whitewater as the third seed and will take on second-seeded UW-Oshkosh in the first round on Friday at noon. Top-seeded UW-Whitewater meets fourth seed UW-La Crosse in the other first round matchup. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Pointers split a doubleheader with UW-Platteville on Thursday, winning 6-2 and losing 6-4 before taking one of four games from UW-Oshkosh over the weekend. UW-Stevens Point trounced the Titans 22-0 in the first game on Saturday, building an 18-0 lead in the third inning. UW-Oshkosh responded with an 8-0 win in the nightcap and then pulled out 3-2 and 9-5 wins on Sunday.

Freshman Jake Frombach (Stratford, WI) had a huge week for the Pointers with a .556 average (10-for-18) and hits in eight consecutive at-bats. Matt Peterson (Plymouth, WI) drove in nine runs for the week and six runs in the 22-0 win, including a grand slam in the first inning. Josh Blaha (Two Rivers, WI) pitched a complete game shutout against UW-Oshkosh and Jeff Pieper (Wausau, WI) had a complete game victory against UW-Platteville.

SOFTBALL (21-17 overall, 7-9 WIAC)

The Pointers lost their first two games at the WIAC tournament in Platteville over the weekend to finish the season with a 21-17 record. UW-Stevens Point was held to two hits in a 2-1 loss to UW-River Falls and managed just three hits in a 3-1 defeat to UW-La Crosse.

Senior Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI) allowed four hits in the loss to UW-River Falls and became the 28th pitcher in NCAA Division III history to record 500 career strikeouts. Senior Amanda Sparks (Elcho, WI) was the only UW-Stevens Point player to record hits in each game.

Senior Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, WI) had her NCAA Division III hitting streak record snapped at 36 straight games after finishing zero-for-three in both games. However, she still finished with the second-highest single-season batting average in school history at .467 and a school record career batting average of .399.

Seventh-seeded UW-Whitewater won three straight games on Saturday to claim the title and advance to the Division III tournament. The Warhawks beat top-seeded UW-Platteville twice in the finals and became the third straight team seeded sixth or lower to win the WIAC tournament.

The UW-Stevens Point men�s and women�s teams both had strong performances at the WIAC outdoor championships in Stevens Point over the weekend as the women posted their highest finish since 1985 with a second place effort and the men placed third. It marks the 12th straight year the men�s team has placed third or higher, while the women have done so seven of the last nine years.

The Pointer women finished just three points behind UW-La Crosse in the closest women�s race ever. UW-La Crosse edged UW-Oshkosh by five and a half points for the men�s title in the closest men�s competition since 1974.

UW-Stevens Point had seven champions on the women�s side as Teresa Stanley (Whitewater, WI) was the only double winner, claiming the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:19.69 and the 5,000-meter run in 18:29.01. Kara Vosters (Little Chute, WI) won the 10,000-meter run title in 38:31.71. Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI) won her second straight shot put title with a throw of 14.04 meters and Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI) claimed the triple jump in 12.07 meters. Nechuta was also second in the discus and Butkowski was runner-up in the 200-meter dash.

The women�s team also had two relay champions as the 4x800 relay of Isabelle Delannay (Defiance, MO), Leah Herlache (Green Bay, WI), Jenna Mitchler (Kaukauna, WI) and Megan Craig (Bangor, WI) won in 9:30.52. The 4x100 relay of Liz Goergen (Apple Valley, MN), Butkowski, Kim Klosno (Stevens Point, WI) and Tara Schmitt (Brookfield, WI) won in 48.63 seconds.

The men�s team had two champions as Aaron Carley (Mauston, WI) took the long jump in 7.15 meters and Scott Dreger (Cambria, WI) claimed the javelin in 56.88 meters. Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI) was runner-up in the hammer throw at 56.86 meters.
