Mike Hall (Manitowoc, WI) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh of the second game with a solo homer and then added a three-run double in the eighth inning. UW-Stevens Point captured the title at the Augustana Invitational last weekend in Moline, Ill. The Pointers beat Fontbonne (Mo.) 5-2, St. Ambrose (Iowa) 3-2 and Knox (Ill.) 9-0 for the title. UW-Stevens Point played another game against St. Ambrose that did not count in the tournament standings and lost 11-3. Earlier in the week, the Pointers lost their WIAC opening games at UW-Platteville 9-5 and 8-4 before rebounding with a non-conference sweep of Edgewood by 8-0 and 12-0 scores. It was a big week for senior pitcher Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI), who recorded her WIAC career record 422nd strikeout in the win over Edgewood. She also set the NCAA Division III record for career saves with her 14th by pitching the last two innings in the win over St. Ambrose. Freshman outfielder Meagan Strmsek (Oak Creek, WI) also had a huge week, finishing with hits in 13 of her last 14 at-bats for the week. Senior Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, WI) has had a hit in every game this season and is currently hitting .455 for the year. She also already set the single-season and career school stolen base records with 12 steals this year and 30 for her career.
