Briski Throws Perfect Game in First
Collegiate Start
Jeanann Briski finally
got her chance and made the most of it Monday in Fort Myers, Fla. The UW-Stevens Point sophomore pitcher made
her first career start and threw a perfect game with two strikeouts as the Pointers
defeated Cardinal Stritch 9-0 in five innings to improve to 5-1 on
their spring trip. Briski, a Berlin native, did not pitch a
single inning during her freshman season and had previously pitched
three innings, giving up one hit and no runs in relief in her first
collegiate game Saturday against Edgewood. Briski didnt even need the benefit of
one of the Pointers hottest hitting days in recent years as they also
defeated Hartwick (N.Y.) 17-6 in the opening game on Monday. Junior third baseman Brooke Woller led the
hitting attack by finishing six-for-six with three home runs for the
day. Woller was three-for-three in each game and had two home runs
against Cardinal Stritch. The Pointers actually trailed Hartwick 6-5
entering the fifth inning, but scored 12 runs in the top of the fifth
and Karen Guckenberger shut down the Hawks in the bottom of the inning
to end the game by the eight-run rule. Katie Knoedler pitched the first
four innings for the win. Carrie Hermsen also had a big day at the
plate, finishing four-for-four with two triples and a home run against
Hartwick. Jill Van Wychen was also four-for-four in the opening-game
win. UW-Stevens Point will play three games on
Tuesday, taking on Division II opponents Hillsdale (Mich.) and Slippery
Rock (Pa.), as well as NAIA Division II Cornerstone (Mich.). Baseball
