The Pointers� season came to a heartbreaking end with
two losses to Lakeland, including a 5-4 loss in 10 innings in the NCAA
Division III regional championship game in Oshkosh on Sunday.
UW-Stevens Point opened the regional Thursday with a 9-3
victory over George Fox (Ore.) and then blanked Calvin (Mich.) 6-0 on
Friday. On Saturday, UW-Stevens Point and Lakeland entered the day as the
only remaining undefeated teams, but the Muskies beat the Pointers 9-3.
UW-Stevens Point rebounded on Saturday night with an 8-7
win over St. Thomas, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to oust the
defending national champions and reach Sunday�s championship.
The Pointers needed to beat Lakeland twice to advance to
the Division III College World Series, but the Muskies took the first game
5-4 on a home run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Bill Verbrick (Appleton, WI) suffered the loss, but still
earned all-tournament honors with 17 1/3 innings and 20 strikeouts for the
weekend. He also set the WIAC single-season record with 115 strikeouts this
season. Josh Blaha (Two Rivers, WI) pitched a complete game shutout against
Calvin to land a spot on the all-tournament team.
Mike Hall (Manitowoc, WI) led the Pointers with a .600
batting average (9-for-15) and was joined on the all-tournament team by Matt
Peetz (Spring Green, WI) and Ryan Ivy (Kenosha, WI).
The Pointers finished with a school record 37 wins and
also set records for runs, hits, doubles, RBI�s and home runs.
TRACK AND FIELD
May 23-25 - at NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships

UW-Stevens Point will likely send 21 athletes to this
weekend�s NCAA Division III outdoor championships in St. Paul, Minn.,
hosted by Macalester College.
The Pointers have 15 entries on the men�s side with the
best chances for high finishes coming in some of the field events. Luke
Hilgers (Nekoosa, WI) had the fifth best hammer throw in the country this
season at 183 feet, 11 inches at Saturday�s UW-Oshkosh Invite, while
Jeremiah Rolfs (Iola, WI) had the sixth best throw in the discus at 170
feet.
Mike Mead (Neenah, WI) enters the meet with the seventh
best high jump. Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) will compete in both the 5,000
and 10,000 meter runs and the 400 and 1600 meter relays will both
participate as well.
On the women�s side, six athletes will take part. Jody
Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI) has the fourth best triple jump in the country
this season and Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI) had the fourth best shot put
throw at 46 feet, 7 1/2 inches at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. Nechuta also
provisionally qualified in the discus on Saturday.
Megan Lundahl (Sturgeon Bay, WI) had the nation�s sixth
best discus throw at 148 feet, five inches Saturday in Oshkosh.
Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI) and Kara Vosters (Little
Chute, WI) will compete in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs, while
Marcie Fisher (Oshkosh, WI) will compete in the 5,000 meter run.
