Senior Bill Verbrick (Appleton, WI) pitched the first nine-inning perfect game in WIAC history on Saturday to highlight a weekend that saw the Pointers take three of four games from UW-River Falls.

Verbrick struck out 10 and retired all 27 UW-River Falls batters on Saturday as the Pointers won 5-0. It was the sixth no-hitter in UW-Stevens Point history and the first since 1992. Verbrick�s performance was the first perfect game thrown by a Pointer since Bill Kuse in a five-inning game against UW-Eau Claire in 1961.

The Pointers also won 4-1 on Saturday and then won Sunday�s opening game 7-5 before falling 12-9 in the nightcap. Josh Blaha (Two Rivers, WI) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the win on Saturday and Eric Schlender (Baraboo, WI) gave up two hits over four innings of relief for Sunday�s victory.

University Field will be busy this week with eight games, beginning with a doubleheader against St. Norbert Tuesday. UW-Platteville visits on Wednesday and UW-La Crosse is in town for four games over the weekend.

The Pointers took three of four non-conference games this past weekend in the Chicago area and now prepare for their first seven WIAC games of the season - all in Whitewater this week.

UW-Stevens Point will play a doubleheader at UW-Whitewater on Tuesday and will then face five conference schools in a WIAC cluster weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The Pointers� games with UW-Platteville scheduled for Monday were postponed.

Junior Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI) pitched a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Chicago on Friday and then followed with a one-hitter in a 1-0 win over Aurora on Saturday. She lowered her season ERA to 0.27 and has given up one run over the last 30 innings, including 21 straight scoreless innings. Guckenberger also saved a 3-2 win over Aurora in Saturday�s nightcap.

Junior Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, WI) had hits in every game and is now hitting .500 (24-for-48) for the season.

After winning the opening game against Chicago, the Pointers lost the second game on Friday 6-1. UW-Stevens Point is now 10-5 overall entering the week of conference contests.

TRACK AND FIELD

Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI) and Kara Vosters (Little Chute, WI) both automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor championships in the 10,000 meter run to lead the women�s team at Saturday's UW-La Crosse Invite.

Lebak won the race with a time of 36:42.13, while Vosters was second in 36:52.44, however, overall the Pointers finished third in the triangular as UW-La Crosse won the meet and UW-Oshkosh was second.

Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee, WI) won the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 6.5 inches and Stephanie Renk (Marathon, WI) won the high jump at four feet, 11.75 inches. The 4x100 relay team also won with a time of 50.45 seconds.

Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI) and Jeremiah Rolfs (Iola, WI) each won two events and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor nationals to lead the men�s team past UW-Oshkosh 110-89 in a dual meet Saturday in Oshkosh.

Eschenbauch provisionally qualified in the hammer throw at 182 feet, three inches, while also winning the shot put at 47 feet, 1 3/4 inches. Rolfs qualified in the discus at 160 feet, seven inches and also won the javelin at 171 feet, 11 inches.

Kyle Newman (La Crosse, WI) won the 100 meters in 10.96 seconds, Matt Buska (Mosinee, WI) won the 200 meters in 22.28 seconds and Mathew Legel (Crystal Lake, IL) captured the 400 meters in 50.55 seconds as the Pointers swept the sprinting events. Steve Gillespie (Green Lake, WI) won the 800 meters at 1:59.06 and Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) won the 1,500 meters in 4:01.14.

Also, Andrew Schliepp (Wild Rose, WI) won the long jump at 21 feet, 2 1/2 inches, David Beilke (Luxemburg, WI) won the 400 hurdles in 55.01 seconds and Ryan Shepard (Cornell, WI) won the high jump at six feet, five inches. The 4x100 meter relay also won with a time of 42.46 seconds.
