UW-Stevens Point�s amazing postseason run continues into the NCAA Division III Final Four this weekend as the Pointers make their first trip to the national semifinals since winning the 1987 national championship.

Behind two straight nights of packed crowds at Berg Gym last weekend, the Pointers qualified for the Final Four by beating Webster (Mo.) 71-61 and Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) 64-47. Friday�s game drew a school-record 1,762 fans and Saturday�s game had 1,622 people witness the sectional title game.

Kari Groshek (Rosholt, WI) led the Pointers in scoring in both games, scoring 16 points on Friday and 22 points on Saturday. Andrea Kraemer (Waukesha, WI) and Cassandra Heuer (Two Rivers, WI) each added 15 points on Saturday.

Kraemer (Waukesha, WI) added 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in the win over Webster. In the title game, the Pointers led 29-28 in the second half and used a 14-3 spurt over a seven-minute span to pull away.

Rose-Hulman Institute will be the host school for the Final Four and will have tickets available by calling 812-234-2424. UW-Stevens Point will also have 250 tickets on sale at the UWSP ticket office on Tuesday.

UW-Stevens Point will be sending a fan bus as well. The cost of the bus is $68, which includes transportation and tickets for all four games. Lodging is not included. For fan bus information, call the University Center at 715-346-4242.

The Pointer games will be broadcast live on WWSP 89.9 FM and WIZD 99.9 FM. WSPT 1010 AM and 97.9 FM will likely carry the broadcast as well.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

March 14-16 - Women�s NCAA Championships (at Oxford, Ohio)

March 21-23 - Men�s NCAA Championships (at Oxford, Ohio)

Seven UW-Stevens Point swimmers will take part this weekend at the NCAA Division III women�s swimming and diving championships in Oxford, Ohio.

The Pointers qualified three relays for the championships as the 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay will all take part. The 200 medley relay is seeded fourth in the meet.

Individually, Christine Sammons (Hastings, MN) is seeded third in the 200 breaststroke and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Alissa Bartz (Beloit, WI) is seeded 17th in both the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle.

Other swimmers who will take part on relays and some individual events are Lindsay Correll (Aurora, IL), Erica Janssen (Oshkosh, WI), Jen Randall (Wisconsin Rapids, WI), Amy Rockwell (Zeeland, MI) and Mary Thone (Minneapolis, MN).

TRACK AND FIELD

Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI) placed second in the 35-pound weight throw to lead the UW-Stevens Point men�s track and field team and senior Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI) posted a time of 17:20.26 to finish third in the women�s 5000 meter run at the NCAA Division III indoor championships in Ada, Ohio.

Eschenbauch had a throw of 60 feet, 10.5 inches to finish behind Jamie Sawler of Bates (Maine), who won the event with a heave of 64 feet, 1.75 inches.

The Pointer men finished 18th overall with 10 team points, while the women were 27th with eight team points.

Also on the men�s side, the distance medley relay team of Jesse Baumann (Verona, WI), Matt Buska (Mosinee, WI), Steve Gillespie (Green Lake, WI) and Ben Treptow (Viroqua, WI) finished seventh in a time of 10:04.26.

Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI) earned All-American honors in triple jump for the second straight year, placing eighth with a jump of 37 feet, 8.75 inches. She was fourth in the event at last year�s championships.

The UW-La Crosse men and Wheaton (Mass.) women both successfully defended their team championships.

BASEBALL

Believe it or not, baseball season begins this weekend as the Pointers travel to Peoria, Ill. for three games against Division I Bradley University. The teams will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Bradley is off to a 3-5 start and will play its home opener this weekend.

UW-Stevens Point is ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division III preseason poll after finishing 30-14 last season and qualifying for the NCAA tournament.

The Pointers are not taking a trip to Florida this year and will play in Terre Haute, Ind. the following weekend on March 24-25.
