The Pointers pulled off a stunning victory Saturday by ousting four-time
defending national champion Washington University with a 66-60 victory on
the Bears homecourt in St. Louis. The win snapped Washingtons 36-game
winning streak and its incredible 70-game home win streak.
The Pointers advanced to the second round with an 88-52 win over Lake
Forest in the opening round on Wednesday at Berg Gym.
Now the Pointers return home to host the sectional tournament, marking
the first time UW-Stevens Point has ever hosted such an event in mens or
womens basketball. Four teams will play at Berg Gym this weekend for the
right to advance to the Division III Final Four.
Action begins Friday at 5 pm when Chapman, Calif. (23-4) meets Pacific
Lutheran, Wash. (22-3). Then at 7 pm, UW-Stevens Point takes on Webster, Mo.
(25-2). The winners play Saturday at 7 pm for a berth in the Final Four,
which is set for March 15-16 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Senior Carry Boehning (Auburndale, WI) scored a season-high 18 points to
lead the Pointers Saturday at Washington. The Pointers used a 13-1 run in
the first half to build an 11-point halftime lead. Washington threatened the
Pointers lead several times in the second half, but the Pointers fought
off every attempt and held on for the historic victory.
In Wednesdays first round, Kari Groshek (Rosholt, WI) scored 22 points
and Cassandra Heuer (Two Rivers, WI) added 16 points as the Pointers rolled
over Lake Forest.
MENS HOCKEY (18-9-2 overall, 8-4-2 NCHA)
Season complete

Despite a strong late-season surge, including a third place performance
at last weekends NCHA tournament, the Pointers fell short of a spot in
the NCAA Division III tournament.
UW-Stevens Point finished 18-9-2 overall, including an 8-1-2 mark in its
final 11 games. The Pointers only loss during that span came Friday in a
4-3 overtime setback to UW-Superior in the NCHA semifinals, but they bounced
back for a 2-1 win over UW-River Falls in the third place game on Saturday.
Randy Enders (Madison, WI), Joel Marshall (Madison, WI) and Nick Glander
(Brookfield, WI) all scored second period goals to stake the Pointers to a
3-1 lead, but the Yellowjackets came back to win the game 10:31 into
overtime.
Mike Brolsma (Appleton, WI) and Nick Molski (Stevens Point, WI) tallied
first period goals in Saturdays win and Bob Gould (Eagle River, WI)
stopped 44 shots in his final career game to lead the Pointers past UW-River
Falls.
Gould finished his career with a 47-23-4 career record and ranked second
in school history in career wins, saves, shutouts and games played.
WOMENS HOCKEY (26-1 overall, 15-1 NCHA)
Season complete

An amazing season has come to an end for the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point womens hockey team as the Pointers were not
awarded a berth to the first-ever NCAA Division III championship.
The Pointers finished 26-1 and won their last 15 games to capture the
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association championship. However, the league
does not have an automatic berth and only one bid goes to independents and
teams from non-automatic qualifying conferences. Elmira (N.Y.) finished
24-1-1 and won the East Coast Athletic Conference West Division, which also
doesnt have an automatic berth, and the Soaring Eagles were picked over
UW-Stevens Point.
Elmira is the top seed for the six-team event and will host the
first-ever Division III Frozen Four March 8-9.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
March 14-16 - Womens NCAA Championships (at Oxford, Ohio)
March 21-23 - Mens NCAA Championships (at Oxford, Ohio)

The Pointers have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Division III womens
championships in Oxford, Ohio, while the mens team has three weeks to get
ready for the event.
Both teams were off this past week, though some individuals competed at a
last chance meet in La Crosse, hoping to still qualify for the NCAA
championships.
TRACK AND FIELD
March 8-9 - NCAA Indoor Championships (at Ada, Ohio)
<http://www.uwsp.edu/athletics/track/>
Megan Lundahl (Sturgeon Bay, WI) was UW-Stevens Points lone individual
champion, but the Pointer track teams showed their depth with third place
performances in both the mens and womens competitions at last weeks
WIAC championships. UW-La Crosse won both titles.
Lundahl had a throw of 52 feet, 4.5 inches to win the weight throw title.
Second place finishers for the womens team were Jenny Todd (Wisconsin
Rapids, WI), who had a jump of 17 feet, 11 inches in the long jump, Jody
Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI), who had a time of 26.54 seconds in the 200
meters, Megan Craig (Mindoro, WI), who posted a time of 4:45.14 in the 1500
meters and Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI), who finished the 3000 meters in
10:17.86. The distance medley relay team was second in 12:12.33.
Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI) was the top mens performer with a throw
of 59 feet, seven inches to finish second in the weight throw. The men had
third place efforts from Aaron Carley in the long jump at 23 feet, 4.75
inches, Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) in the 5000 meters at 14:50.57 and
Jesse Bauman (Verona, WI) in the 800 meters at 1:55.61.
WRESTLING (3-3 overall, 2-2 WIAC)
Season complete
<http://www.uwsp.edu/athletics/wrestling/>
UW-Stevens Point sophomore Yan White (Antigo, WI) won four straight
matches and posted a pin in the championship match to capture the NCAA
Division III wrestling championship at 197 pounds late Saturday in
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
White pinned Upper Iowas Cliff Thompson in 4:51 in the championship
match to become the third wrestler in UW-Stevens Point history to win a
national title. White joins two-time winner Perry Miller, who was the
heavyweight champion in 1997 and 1998, and Bob Berceau, who won at 134
pounds in 1989.
White, who was seeded fourth at the weight class, completed his season
with a 24-4 overall record and his finish led the Pointers to a 12th place
team finish, which is their highest since finishing ninth in 1998.
Also for the Pointers, freshman Cody Koenig (Underwood, IA) won his
opening match at 165 pounds with a 14-12 victory over fourth-seeded James
Henderson of College of New Jersey, however, he lost his next two matches to
end the year with a 20-9 record.
Junior Mark Burger (Merrill, WI) lost to the third and sixth-seeded
heavyweight wrestlers in his only two matches. Burger ended his season
15-10.
White opened with an 11-0 whitewash of Bart George of Simpson (Iowa) and
then pinned Rich Gildner of College of New Jersey in 2:26 in the
quarterfinals. White then pulled out a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Kevin
Rasmussen of Augsburg (Minn.) in the semifinals to reach the championship
match. He is the sixth wrestler in UW-Stevens Point history to wrestle in a
national championship match and his 24-4 record is the eighth best
single-season record in school history.
Augsburg won the team title, edging Upper Iowa and Wartburg (Iowa) by six
points. UW-La Crosse finished fourth. UW-La Crosses Jason Ott won the
heavyweight title to give the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
two individual champions.
