UW-Stevens Point takes part in the WIAC tournament this weekend in Whitewater and will meet top-seeded UW-Whitewater in the first round Friday at noon. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Pointers tied with UW-La Crosse for third place in the league, but rain on Sunday forced the Pointers to take the fourth seed. UW-Stevens Point lost the first game of a doubleheader to UW-La Crosse 5-3 in 10 innings and the Eagles led 2-0 in the fourth inning of the second game when the game was cancelled after a two-hour rain delay.

UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse tied for third place at 8-5 in the WIAC, but the Eagles gain the third seed because of their victory in the first game.

The Pointers split with UW-River Falls on Saturday to clinch the tournament spot. UW-Stevens Point won the opener 2-1 as Jeff Pieper (Wausau, WI) struck out eight in a complete game effort. The Falcons then scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth in the second game for an 8-5 victory.

Sam Molski (Stevens Point, WI) was five-for-11 for the week and hit his single-season school record tying 11th home run of the season against UW-La Crosse.

The Pointers will make their fourth NCAA Division III tournament appearance in six seasons after winning the WIAC tournament for the first time since 1995.

UW-Stevens Point will travel to Waverly, Iowa this weekend and will take on Marian in the first round in a rematch of a pair of non-conference games last week. The Pointers swept Marian 1-0 and 8-0 as Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI) pitched a one-hitter in the opener and Nicki Bertram (Marion, WI) had a two-hitter in the second game. Kelly Rutta (Stevens Point, WI) hit a solo home run for the only run in the first game.

Guckenberger pitched 28 innings in two days over the weekend and went 4-0 to lead the Pointers to the WIAC tournament title. Rutta was nine-for-16 for the weekend and reached base in 15 of her 19 plate appearances.

The Pointers beat UW-River Falls 5-0 to open the tournament as Cari Briley (Creston, IA) had a two-run homer and a two-run single. UW-Stevens Point then beat UW-Whitewater 4-2 behind a three-run homer from Rutta and then topped UW-La Crosse 3-2 as Sarah Berg (Stillwater, MN) had a game-tying single and scored the winning run on an error.

The Pointers lost to UW-Eau Claire 5-0, but beat UW-La Crosse 2-1 in the title game as Nicole Alexander (Dodgeville, WI) singled home Rutta with the winning run in the third inning.
