Pointer Sports April 1, 2000 Baseball Team Splits at River City Classic to Finish 3-1 for Weekend UW-Stevens Point pounded out 12 hits in a 7-4 win over Bemidji State, but was held to just three hits in a 2-0 loss to St. Scholastica to finish 3-1 for the weekend at the River City Classic Saturday in La Crosse. The Pointers are now 11-4 for the season and had a seven-game winning streak snapped in the second game loss. The Pointers jumped out to a 7-2 lead on Bemidji State as Sam Molski hit a solo home run in the first inning and Ryan Ivy hit a two-run homer in the third. The Pointers also scored three second inning runs when Nick Cahoon, Jon Jagler and Molski hit run-scoring singles. UW-Stevens Point added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Rob Govek. Jeff Pieper earned the victory by striking out two and walking three over 5 2/3 innings. Jared Szews set the Beavers down in order in the seventh to earn the save. In the second game, St. Scholastica scored a pair of unearned runs in the third for the games only runs off Pointers pitcher Troy Bielmeier. The Saints Nathan Ahlberg led off the third with a single and moved to second when Jamie Steinberg reached on an error. Both runners scored on RBI singles by Chris LePine and Leland Swenson. St. Scholasticas Josh Lamppa allowed just three hits as the Pointers had just one runner reach second base the entire game. UW-Stevens Point opens its home schedule Tuesday against Concordia (Wis.) at 2 p.m. Track Teams Sweep Pointer Coldman Invitational UW-Stevens Point won both the mens and womens team titles to open the outdoor track and field season on a winning note at the Coldman Invitational Saturday in Stevens Point. The Pointers had no multiple event winners as seven different women and seven different men captured titles. For the women, Leah Juno won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:47.94 and Becky Lebak won the 5,000 meter run in 17:55.36. Julie Stemper captured the 400 hurdles in 1:09.93 and Bridget Frederick won the 400 meters in 1:01.93. The 4x100 meter relay team also won in 50.63 seconds. Lisa Brownie won the long jump title with a leap of 16-feet, 11-1/2 inches and Nicki Merten captured the shot put with a toss of 35-feet, � inch. On the mens side, Craig Gunderson won the 200 meters in 22.68 and Jesse Drake won the 1,500 meters in 3:59.66. Shane Suehring won the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:29.15 and the 4x100 relay team on in 42.06 seconds. Mike Mead jumped six-feet, nine-inches to win the high jump and Joel Schult won the discus with a throw of 154-feet, five-inches. Steve Melin also won the javelin with a heave of 177-feet, three-inches. |
