Pointers pounce on Sabres
From the Stevens Point Journal
One day after struggling to a 47-37 victory over Madison Edgewood, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's basketball team rolled over Marian College of Fond du Lac 68-47 in the second day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Lake Michigan Conference Challenge at Edgewood College on Sunday.
All 15 players who dressed for the Pointers saw action as UW-SP improved to 4-1 on the season.
"This was a complete-game effort," said UW-SP coach Jack Bennett. "Defensively, our intensity was high in both games this weekend, but this game was much smoother and we were much sounder with the way we handled the basketball.
"We also were able to give everyone who dressed some minutes for the first time this season."
Senior forward Brant Bailey led the Pointers with 19 points as 10 different UW-SP players found their way into the scoring column.
Brent Larson added nine points and Joe Zuiker and Gabe Frank added eight apiece for UW-SP, which has won three straight.
Scott Jaeger led the Sabres with 18 points and Jason Hovland added 10 points for Marian, 2-2.
Unlike the previous night against Edgewood, when they connected on just 28 percent of their shots, the Pointers shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field against the Sabres.
The Pointers built an 11-point lead, 33-22, at halftime and outscored Marian 35-25 in the second half.
UW-SP won the rebound battle 38-22, led by Zuiker with eight boards.
Bennett was pleased with the play of Zuiker, who finished the two-day tournament with 26 rebounds, including a career-high 18 Saturday night against Edgewood.
"Joe Zuiker had a great tournament," Bennett said. "His scoring numbers weren't great, but his efforts on the board and his passing and the way he set screens for our other players were second to none."
Bennett was also pleased that his team is taking some momentum into their WIAC opener Wednesday against UW-Whitewater.
"This was a very good tournament for us," Bennett said. "We earned two good wins against two good teams from the Lake Michigan Conference. This was a good experience for us and should help us prepare for our conference opener."
The Pointers and Warhawks will tip off at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Quandt Fieldhouse.
