From the Stevens Point Journal
Road weary from its weekend trip to Kentucky, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's basketball team was content to exchange body blows with Lawrence University in the first half of its home opener Tuesday night, before delivering the knockout punch with a big run in the second half. When the final bell rang, the Pointers handed the Vikings a 90-61 setback at Quandt Fieldhouse. The Pointers trailed 45-44 four minutes into the second half, when they erupted for a 27-6 run to open up a 20-point advantage. Senior forward Brant Bailey sparked the run with 10 of his game-high 30 points.
"I knew coming in that it (the Kentucky trip) would have an affect on us," said UW-SP coach Jack Bennett, whose team improved to 2-1.
"We didn't get back until Sunday morning and we only had one day to prepare, so we took the approach like a boxing match.
"You don't go out there right away trying to knock your opponent out. You try to wear them down, then you try to knock them out."
The Pointers earned the KO by picking up the tempo and opening up the court. Bailey started the run with a pair of jumpers. Travis Kornowski followed with a pair of 3-pointers, Brent Larson canned a 3-pointer and Kalonji Kadima hit back-to-back baskets as UW-SP opened up a 16-point bulge, 61-45, before Larwrence's Mark Conard stopped the bleeding by hitting a free throw with 11:06 remaining.
"I think we turned it around when Kornowski came in and made those two shots in the second half," Bennett said.
"Before that, they were jamming the inside on us. But he came in and gave us the medium-range threat we needed to force them to be honest on defense."
With the Vikings filling the lane defensively in the first half, UW-SP turned to its outside game. The Pointers connected on 9-of-15 3-point shots in the first half in opening up a 43-36 lead. Forward Gabe Frank and Kadima were both 3-for-3 from long range in the first half. The Pointers tied a school record with 13 3-pointers in the game.
"We preach to our kids to take what the defense gives them," Bennett said.
"They jammed the lane and gave us the 3's, so we took them."
Bailey, who was 10-of-14 from the floor, distributed his points evenly, scoring 15 in each half. In his first three games, the senior from Wisconsin Dells has scored 24, 23 and 30 points.
"Brent is off to a great start," the UW-SP coach said. "But the stat that means the most to me is that he had four assists. That means he is starting to understand when he is getting double-teamed and looking to get the ball to an open player."
Kadima added 14 points and Frank finished with 11 for UW-SP. Lawrence (2-1) was led by Conard with 13 points and Adam LaVoy with 12. The Pointers return to action Saturday and Sunday in Madison. Saturday they face Marian College and Sunday they take on Madison Edgewood.
