Pointers Close Regular Season by Beating Superior

Box Score

Scoring runs to close the first half and start the second half propelled the UW-Stevens Point mens basketball team to convincing 85-56 over UW-Superior on Saturday at the Quandt Fieldhouse.

The Pointers built an early lead before the Yellowjackets rallied and faced a 26-25 deficit with four minutes left in the first half. UW-Stevens Point then closed the first half with an 11-2 run and opened the second half with an 8-0 spurt to pull away for the victory.

UW-Stevens Point ended the regular season with a 16-9 overall record and 11-5 conference mark. The Pointers will be the third seed for the upcoming Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament and host sixth-seeded UW-Platteville on Tuesday at 7 p.m. UW-Superior ended the year 5-20 overall and 0-16 in the WIAC, marking the first winless season by a league team since the Yellowjackets failed to win a game during the 1989-90 season.

Jon Krull started the offensive attack for the Pointers with 10 of the teams first 22 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. Krull finished with 14 points and six assists on seven-for-seven shooting from two-point range before Pete Rortvedt and Steve Hicklin took over the offense as each scored 12 points in a 48-point second half.

Rortvedt matched a career-high with 18 points and grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds. His biggest play came in the closing seconds of the first half when he drained a three-pointer from the left corner for a 37-27 halftime lead. Hicklin had 19 points, finishing eight-for-10 from the floor on primarily mid-range jumpers.

The Pointers shot 54.1 percent from the field and held UW-Superior to 31.7 percent shooting. Leonard Cobb, the leagues leading scorer and rebounder, scored 22 points and had nine rebounds, but was eight-for-22 from the field.

UW-Stevens Point had 14 different players score points and made nine three-pointers in the victory.
