Pointers Outlast Blue Devils in Double Overtime

Box Score

Brian Bauer and Jon Krull were running on empty, but both veteran UW-Stevens Point mens basketball players came up with big plays in double overtime to lead the Pointers to an exhausting 89-84 double overtime win over UW-Stout on Saturday at the Quandt Fieldhouse.

The duo combined to score 11 of UW-Stevens Points 15 points in the double overtime period as Bauer finished with a career-high 29 points and Krull contributed 23 points to extend the Pointers home winning streak to 27 straight games. It was the first game during the streak decided by less than six points. Both Bauer and Krull played 47 of the games 50 minutes.

Bauer had the biggest play of the game on a four-point play with 3:06 left in the double overtime and the game tied at 76-76. Pete Rortvedt missed a three-pointer, Krull wrestled away the offensive rebound and passed to the top of the key where Bauer launched the three-pointer and was fouled. He converted the free throw and the Pointers led by at least four points for the remainder of the game.

UW-Stout, which entered the week ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III but lost for the second time in four days, never led during regulation and didnt tie the game until Jacob Nonemacher hit a pair of free throws with 7.5 seconds left. The Pointers hit their first three shots to open the game and took a quick 8-0 lead during a three-point shooting barrage in the first half. UW-Stevens Point made seven shots from behind the arc in the first half, while taking 19 of its 29 shots from three-point range in building a 35-29 lead at intermission.

The Pointers scored the first four points of the second half and pushed the lead to as many as 14 points at 55-41 with 9:41 left. However, the Blue Devils battled back, hitting six of their next seven shots during a 16-4 run that was capped by a four-point play by Ryan Stangl with 6:27 left.

UW-Stout twice closed to within one point, but the Pointers were able to extend the lead back to four points each time before the Blue Devils finally tied the game in the final seconds.

UW-Stout took its first lead of the game on the opening possession of overtime when Terry Farmer scored a rebound basket. With the first overtime tied at 72-72 at 1:17 left, Brian Buck scored a wide open layup on a defensive breakdown by the Pointers to put UW-Stout ahead 74-72. The Pointers tied the game with 21 seconds left on a driving layup by Krull and Farmer missed a short jumper for the Blue Devils at the buzzer.

UW-Stout again scored first in the second overtime, but Krull hit two free throws to tie the game before Bauers four-point play. The Pointers went ahead by as many as nine points, but Stangl hit two three-pointers in the final minute on second chances as UW-Stout had six of their 23 offensive rebounds in the second overtime. The Blue Devils shot just 19 percent (four-for-21) in the overtimes.

The Blue Devils dominated the boards all night with a 52-38 advantage. Greg Chaisson had 20 points to lead the Blue Devils, while Farmer had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Nonemacher had 15 points and nine rebounds. Rortvedt had a career high for the second straight game with 18 points for the Pointers. Bauer also had a career-best 10 rebounds for his first double-double.

The game marked the first overtime game at the Quandt Fieldhouse since Jan. 5, 2002 against UW-Platteville and the first time the Pointers have played a double overtime game since Jan. 28, 1998 against UW-Eau Claire.
