Long-Range Shooting Key Pointers' Win

A big first half run and red-hot three-point
shooting keyed the UW-Stevens Point men�s basketball team to a 70-56 victory
on Saturday at UW-River Falls.
The Pointers trailed 8-7 early in the game before
using a 16-2 run over an six-minute span to take a 23-10 lead with 8:59
remaining. UW-River Falls cut the lead to seven points at one point of the
second half, but came no closer as the Pointers improved to 12-5 overall and
7-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
UW-Stevens Point shot 46.3 percent from the field
and did most of its damage from long range with 11-for-23 three-point
shooting. Steve Hicklin led the team with 18 points and drained three
three-pointers, while Brian Bauer had four long range shots and finished
with 14 points. Matt Bouche provided a lift in his first start since Jan. 2
with eight points and seven rebounds.
The Pointers led 36-28 at halftime and maintained
that lead with the Falcons cutting the advantage to 50-43 with 12:10
remaining. Khalifa El-Amin followed with a three-pointer and Bauer added
another three-pointer on the next possession as the Pointers regained a
13-point lead.
UW-River Falls shot 39.6 percent from the field
with Ryan Zylstra scoring a team-high 18 points.
Saturday�s game was the first of three straight
road games for the Pointers, who remained in first place in the WIAC and
play at co-leader UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday. |
