Beamish Has Big
Night as Pointers Down Falcons

Freshman Bryan Beamish enjoyed a breakout game
with 18 points and five rebounds in helping the UW-Stevens Point men�s
basketball team to a 74-53 triumph over UW-River Falls on Saturday at the
Quandt Fieldhouse.
Beamish, who had scored a total of nine points in
the team�s first four games, was six-for-seven from the floor and
three-for-four from three-point range while adding a pair of assists. The
win pushed the Pointers to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference entering a pair of key conference road
games at UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse.
Jon Krull led the Pointers in scoring for the
fourth time this season and did it in a similar fashion as he has in each of
those previous games, totaling 20 points with 14 coming at the free throw
line. Krull, who leads the WIAC in free throws attempted, was 14-for-16 at
the stripe and also grabbed eight rebounds in the victory.
The Pointers held an early 10-8 lead, but held the
Falcons to just one field goal over the next 10:31, forcing six turnovers
during the stretch, including four straight possessions at one point.
Meanwhile, UW-Stevens Point slowly extended its lead to 25-11 on a pair of
Krull free throws with 6:47 left in the half.
UW-Stevens Point led 34-20 at halftime and the
Falcons pulled to within 40-29 with 16:43 left when Beamish hit a
three-pointer and Brian Bauer followed with a long jumper and scored a
three-point play to push the lead to 48-29 with 13:08 remaining.
The Falcons did manage to close to within 57-46 on
a three-pointer by Eric Kossoris with 6:10 left, but UW-Stevens Point again
turned up the defense, holding UW-River Falls without a basket until 38
seconds remained in the game. The Pointers went on a 13-3 run during the
span to put the game away.
Bauer added 12 points and Steve Hicklin had six
assists for the Pointers. Hans Hoeg led the Falcons with 14 points and eight
rebounds.
