Beamish Has Big Night as Pointers Down Falcons

Box Score

Freshman Bryan Beamish enjoyed a breakout game with 18 points and five rebounds in helping the UW-Stevens Point mens basketball team to a 74-53 triumph over UW-River Falls on Saturday at the Quandt Fieldhouse.

Beamish, who had scored a total of nine points in the teams first four games, was six-for-seven from the floor and three-for-four from three-point range while adding a pair of assists. The win pushed the Pointers to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference entering a pair of key conference road games at UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse.

Jon Krull led the Pointers in scoring for the fourth time this season and did it in a similar fashion as he has in each of those previous games, totaling 20 points with 14 coming at the free throw line. Krull, who leads the WIAC in free throws attempted, was 14-for-16 at the stripe and also grabbed eight rebounds in the victory.

The Pointers held an early 10-8 lead, but held the Falcons to just one field goal over the next 10:31, forcing six turnovers during the stretch, including four straight possessions at one point. Meanwhile, UW-Stevens Point slowly extended its lead to 25-11 on a pair of Krull free throws with 6:47 left in the half.

UW-Stevens Point led 34-20 at halftime and the Falcons pulled to within 40-29 with 16:43 left when Beamish hit a three-pointer and Brian Bauer followed with a long jumper and scored a three-point play to push the lead to 48-29 with 13:08 remaining.

The Falcons did manage to close to within 57-46 on a three-pointer by Eric Kossoris with 6:10 left, but UW-Stevens Point again turned up the defense, holding UW-River Falls without a basket until 38 seconds remained in the game. The Pointers went on a 13-3 run during the span to put the game away.

Bauer added 12 points and Steve Hicklin had six assists for the Pointers. Hans Hoeg led the Falcons with 14 points and eight rebounds.
