Hot Shooting Leads
Titans in Battle for First Place

UW-Oshkosh got out to a fast start and kept its
hot-shooting touch throughout the game in holding off UW-Stevens Point for a
74-62 victory in a matchup of teams that entered the night tied for first
place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men�s basketball
race.
The 21st-ranked Titans made nine of their first 12
shots to build a 22-10 lead eight minutes into the game and the Pointers
came no closer than seven points the rest of the way. It was UW-Oshkosh�s
ninth straight victory as the Titans improved to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in the
WIAC. UW-Stevens Point fell to 12-6 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
Titans� guard Andy Jahnke led the early shooting
barrage by hitting four of five three-pointers during the first seven
minutes and scoring 12 of his team�s first 20 points. UW-Oshkosh shot 56.0
percent in the first half and held UW-Stevens Point to 31.0 percent in
building a 36-24 halftime advantage.
The second half was much of the same as the
Pointers hit a pair of early baskets to pull within 37-28, but UW-Oshkosh
made its first four shots of the half while scoring the next nine points to
push the lead back to 16 points.
The Titans actually shot the ball even better in
the second half, connecting on 66.7 percent from the field to finish the
game at 60.5 percent. UW-Stevens Point finished the game at 35.1 percent and
was just nine-for-29 from three-point range.
Jahnke finished the night with 24 points and six
assists, while Kerry Gibson had 21 points, six rebounds and six blocks. Jon
Krull led the Pointers with 16 points and Pete Rortvedt had 15 points. |
