Power Pointers Past Eagles

Matt Bouche and Jon Krull led a scorching second
half shooting performance by both teams as UW-Stevens Point outgunned UW-La
Crosse for an 83-77 men�s basketball victory on Saturday at the Quandt
Fieldhouse.
Bouche, a senior forward, had his first career
double-figure game with 13 points, hitting all five second half field goal
attempts as the Pointers broke open a tie game by connecting on 10 straight
shots in the victory. The teams combined for 98 points in the second half
and, together, made 14 consecutive shots at one point in the half.
The victory helped the Pointers maintain pace atop
the loss column in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as they
improved to 9-3 in league play and 14-7 overall entering a home contest with
co-leader UW-Whitewater on Wednesday. UW-La Crosse dropped to 8-5 in the
conference and 17-5 overall.
With the game tied at 37-37 with 16:47 remaining,
Bouche took over the Pointers� offense, draining his first career
three-point field goal attempt and then three straight 15-foot jumpers to
score the team�s next nine points. His four shots were the first of
UW-Stevens Point�s 10-shot outbreak as the Pointers built the lead to 61-52
with 10:12 remaining.
Marcus Conigliaro also had a big second half for
UW-La Crosse, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half, including 14
in the final 4:07 of the game. His three-pointer with 4:07 left brought the
Eagles within 66-61. Jon Krull followed with a layup and then Bouche hit a
jumper from the free throw line to put the Pointers ahead 70-61 with 3:10
left.
UW-La Crosse made three straight three-pointers
with under two minutes left to rally back within five at 75-70 with 1:18
left. The Eagles then picked off an errant Pointers� pass, but Chris
Fehrenbach missed a three-pointer at the other end.
Krull had 17 of his game-high 27 points in the
second half and was 10-for-10 at the free throw line, including
eight-for-eight in the final 2:05 of the game. Krull also had eight assists
and five rebounds.
All five starters were in double figures for
UW-Stevens Point as Steve Hicklin had 13 points and Brian Bauer and Pete
Rortvedt each had 11. Rortvedt had nine of his points in the first half,
including a three-pointer with five seconds left for a 34-27 halftime lead.
Fehrenbach totaled 20 points to lead the Eagles,
while Joe Werner had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Ask had 10 points, but
was held scoreless in the second half. |
