Pointers Drop
Tight Game to Eagles in Last Second
Box Score
After battling through 16 lead changes and 14
ties, it seemed only fitting that Saturdays mens basketball game between
UW-Stevens Point and Edgewood came down the final second.
Neither team held bigger than a six-point lead the
entire game and the contest was tied until Edgewoods Eddie Hebl made the
second of two free throws with 0.6 seconds left to give the Eagles the
victory over the Pointers Saturday in Madison.
UW-Stevens Point fell to 12-7 with the loss, while
Edgewood improved to 11-9 following its first victory over the Pointers
since the 1999-2000 season.
The Eagles led 66-60 with just over two minutes
when the Pointers scored six straight points, capped by two free throws from
Jon Krull with 29 seconds left, to tie the game. Edgewood ran the clock down
and Hebl was stripped of the ball as he drove down the lane, drawing the
whistle. He missed the first and after a UW-Stevens Point timeout, calmly
sank the second. The Pointers threw the inbounds pass to Krull, who came up
short on a 25-footer at the buzzer.
The first half was just as tight with neither team
holding larger than a four-point lead until UW-Stevens Point went ahead
33-27 with under one minute remaining, however, the Eagles got a basket and
then a three-pointer from Justin Kuhnau at the buzzer to cut the lead to one
point.
Despite the number of lead changes, Edgewood took
the lead at 53-52 on a basket by Charlie Averkamp with nine minutes left and
never trailed again. The game was tied twice after that point, but the
Pointers were unable to regain the lead.
Jon Krull attempted to lead the comeback, scoring
14 of the Pointers last 16 points and collecting 18 of his game-high 25
points in the second half. UW-Stevens Point struggled from long range,
making just three of 18 three-point shot attempts. Steve Hicklin added 13
points for the Pointers, while Averkamp had 21 points for the Eagles. |
