Pointers Beat Stout to Stay in First Place

Central Wisconsin Sunday
Original Article

Box Score

MENOMONIE - The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's basketball team's 64-52 win over UW-Stout on Saturday was about as big as it has been for the Pointers so far this season.

The win moves UWSP (17-2, 9-2 WIAC) into a half-game lead in the race for the conference title as UW-Platteville was idle on Saturday. Pointers coach Jack Bennett said Saturday's tussle with the Blue Devils was reminiscent of their NCAA Division III national championship run last year.

"We got huge performances out of (Nick) Bennett and (Jason) Kalsow but also some solid play off the bench. It really was a team performance and that's the only way you're going to beat a team as athletic and strong as Stout," Bennett said.

The Pointers came out of the first half down 33-31, but exploded in the second half with a 33-19 advantage. Part of the Pointers' success came at the expense of Stout's deteriorating offense. After hitting 42.9 percent (12 for 28) from the floor in the first half, the Blue Devils were just 26.7 percent (8 for 30) in the second half. UWSP maintained an even 50 percent (12 for 24) in each half.

The Pointers' main scoring tandem - Bennett and Kalsow - were back at it again as Bennett put up a team-high 27 points and Kalsow added 21.

Eric Maus hauled in 11 rebounds for the Pointers - all on the defensive end of the ball.

Coach Bennett said he isn't going to let the win get inside the heads of his players as the season still trudges on. The Pointers begin a series of four home games next Saturday beginning with UW-Eau Claire.

"The win doesn't guarantee anything but I can't think of a better way to come back and play at home than this game on the road," Bennett said.
