CHICAGO - The University
of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's basketball team took its first step in
defending its NCAA Division III national championship with a 65-42 win over
Southwestern (Tex.) in the Midway Classic on Saturday.
The Pointers opened their season opener by hitting six of their first seven
shots and jumped out to a quick 20-2 lead. UWSP outscored the Pirates 13-0
in the final 5:10 of the first half and grabbed a convincing 42-15 lead at
halftime. They then scored the first eight points of the second half to cap
off the 21-0 run.
Jason Kalsow led UWSP with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor.
Nick Bennett added 13 while Eric Maus poured in 11.
The Pointers found the right touch on the floor as they hit 45.2 percent of
their shots, including 17 of 27 in the first half. UWSP used its success

On the other side of the ball, the Pirates were 31.3 percent from the field,
including a dismal 6 for 21 in the opening half.
Aaron Bowser led Southwestern with 15 points. Danny Franklin added 12.
The Pointers are back in action today when they face host University of
Chicago. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
