Defensive Effort Lifts Pointers Past UW-La Crosse

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point used a stifling defensive effort to shut down UW-La Crosse on Saturday roll to a 65-49 mens basketball victory at the Quandt Fieldhouse.

The Pointers made it tough on the Eagles to score from the very beginning as UW-La Crosse missed 11 of its first 12 shots and UW-Stevens Point built an early 10-2 lead during the Eagles dry spell.

Joe Werner was the only UW-La Crosse player having any success against the Pointers defense that entered the game allowing just 52.7 points per game. Werner scored the teams first 10 points over the first 16:29 of the game as UW-Stevens Point led 27-10. The Pointers took a 34-13 lead into halftime as Brian Bauer drained a three-pointer with two seconds left in the first half.

UW-Stevens Point maintained its lead during the second half before the Eagles closed to within 14 points against the Pointers reserves at 63-49 with 1:43 left.

Jason Kalsow had a big day for the Pointers with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. The senior had 13 points and six rebounds in the first half and hit a career-high three three-pointers as the Pointers were five-for-nine from long range in the first half.

Nick Bennett added 14 points for UW-Stevens Point, but had his streak of 35 straight games with a three-pointer snapped. Eric Maus added seven points and 11 rebounds.

Werner finished with 12 points and seven rebounds to lead the Eagles.
