Lifts Pointers Past UW-La Crosse

UW-Stevens Point used a stifling defensive effort
to shut down UW-La Crosse on Saturday roll to a 65-49 men�s basketball
victory at the Quandt Fieldhouse.
The Pointers made it tough on the Eagles to score
from the very beginning as UW-La Crosse missed 11 of its first 12 shots and
UW-Stevens Point built an early 10-2 lead during the Eagles� dry spell.
Joe Werner was the only UW-La Crosse player having
any success against the Pointers� defense that entered the game allowing
just 52.7 points per game. Werner scored the team�s first 10 points over the
first 16:29 of the game as UW-Stevens Point led 27-10. The Pointers took a
34-13 lead into halftime as Brian Bauer drained a three-pointer with two
seconds left in the first half.
UW-Stevens Point maintained its lead during the
second half before the Eagles closed to within 14 points against the
Pointers� reserves at 63-49 with 1:43 left.
Jason Kalsow had a big day for the Pointers with
20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. The senior had 13 points and six
rebounds in the first half and hit a career-high three three-pointers as the
Pointers were five-for-nine from long range in the first half.
Nick Bennett added 14 points for UW-Stevens Point,
but had his streak of 35 straight games with a three-pointer snapped. Eric
Maus added seven points and 11 rebounds.
Werner finished with 12 points and seven rebounds
to lead the Eagles. |
