CHICAGO - Jason Kalsow
matched a career-high with 28 points as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point men's basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 70-58 victory over the
University of Chicago on Sunday to win the Midway Classic championship.
Nick Bennett added 25 points for UWSP, including a 4-for-5 performance from
3-point range.
"They are one of the best duos that have ever put on the purple and gold at
UWSP," Pointers coach Jack Bennett said. "They carried the team on their
shoulders and there will be nights we have to have them do that."
Chicago had a 38-28 lead
with 15:55 left in the second before Kalsow - the tournament's MVP - scored
seven straight points to spark a 22-3 Pointer run over next 8:53.
The Pointers hit 17 of 25 shots in the second half and rebounded from a
shaky 9 for 28 first half.
'That came because we had a better defense," Bennett said. "Give Chicago
credit. They gave us a good challenge and our defense was what picked up our
intensity on offense.
Eric Maus led the Pointers with seven rebounds and Kyle Grusczynski chalked
up a team-high three assists.
Brian Cuttica led the host Maroons with 11 points, including 3 of 9 from
3-point range while Brandon Woodhead added 10.
The Pointers travel to Lakeland College on Friday, then host Ripon College
on Saturday.
